Delaware Lutheran Community Services assistance programs.

Numerous programs are administered by the Lutheran Community Services (LCS) of Delaware. The charity organization works with local churches to help the less fortunate, homeless and poor. Services are available across the state, including in the counties of Sussex, New Castle and the city of Wilmington. Some of the main assistance programs available are below, however call for details and more information.

Housing programs, including funds for paying rent or mortgages, is available to low-income families in the state. Aid is for those who are not as fortunate as others with keeping a roof over their head. The help is organized by both the Lutheran Community Services FAITH Center as well as another center, the Rodney St. Office. Those in need of housing assistance can visit centers at 226 N. Walnut St. in Wilmington Delaware.

Low-income qualified tenants and homeowners can use a complete range of low interest rate housing loans and grants. The funds can be used to pay for security deposits, mortgage or rent payments, and more. The assistance is from the FAITH Center. In addition, additional financial help is provided regarding utilities or heating bills. In some cases LCS will offer zero interest loans and cash grants to provide low-income assistance with back rent payments, mortgage and maybe even a security deposit. The main goal of the non-profit Lutheran Community Services of Delaware organization and its churches is improving the lives of the poor ones, seniors and low-income families. In many cases a partial housing payment is all that stands between a family having a home or apartment to live in and being homeless. They offer emergency assistance as well as food and nutrition education. People in need can also utilize the financial literacy workshops and classes.

Appointments will be made, and clients will receive all other details that they need or that they are interested in getting. All clients are welcome and sometimes required to join financial literacy programs in order to overcome any money issues they are facing. These partner non-profit agencies include Interfaith Community Housing of Delaware, YWCA Delaware, resources from the Delaware Money School, Delaware Community Reinvestment Action Council (DCRAC), and the West End Neighborhood House.

The FAITH Center offers utility bill help. It operates on the east side of Wilmington Delaware but also serves low-income or struggling families throughout New Castle County. If you have any utility issues, such as a disconnection, feel free to contact Lutheran Services because they may have assistance for income qualified clients. The address is 226 N. In addition to the utility bill assistance, The LCS FAITH Center offers housing grants and low interest loans. Other aid includes back-to-work funds to help with paying for tools, uniforms, etc.. All of this, and more, is also available to qualified individuals. Call 302 654-4550 if you are interested or need more information.

In addition to these various food and housing programs, they provide a variety of smaller but important supportive services. It is mainly for seniors and low-income people. These Lutheran Community Services of Delaware resources include regular distributions of free clothing, low cost yet basic home repairs for senior and/or disabled citizens.

Gently used, free clothing from Lutheran Community Services is for low-income clients in need. It is offered several times a month. Many children and students also benefit from this. They provide clothing assistance through a partnership with the non-profit Clothing Bank of Delaware. Call 302 654-8886 for details or to donate.

The clothing bank services also provides entry level employment and training to women that are re-entering the work force. It operates as a clearing house for the collection and distribution of donated clothing for low-income people and it also creates volunteer opportunities for local churches, businesses and non-profit community organizations.

A more unique resource will offer free pharmaceutical vouchers for uninsured or low-income people to pay for patches, prescriptions, free gum and other medicines. Everything offered needs to be used to help people quit smoking, and this program is known as Becoming Smoke Free. Phone 302.654.8886.

Low cost, Basic Home Repairs for Seniors are offered by Lutheran Community Services of Delaware (LCS). The work is done at below market rates for income qualified senior and disabled citizens. By using this assistance program, LCS will ensure that elderly residents stay in their homes and can be safe, secure and independent. Volunteers and staff can help homeowners fix locks, windows, railings, broken doors, furnace tune ups, steps, etc. A sliding scale is used to determine rates and the amount you need to pay. 302 654-8886.

Food assistance from Lutheran Community Services is available and they distribute enough for tens of thousands of people and almost half a million meals every year. Working poor and low-income people can take the food and groceries they provide and prepare meals in their homes. There are several locations for  distribution in both New Castle County and the city of Wilmington. There is also a pantry/food center in Sussex County.

 

 

 

 

If you or your family needs free groceries or boxes of food, please visit the stationary pantries that are located at Zion Lutheran Church, St. Stephen's Church, Hope Church, Hope Lutheran in New Castle. Other options include Mobile Pantries bring food to Shiloh Baptist Church in Wilmington and fresh produce at St. Philip's Lutheran on the Kirkwood Highway as well as St. Stephens in Wilmington.

The Lutheran Food Bank of Delaware provides either free or low-cost food to qualified feeding programs throughout the greater Delaware region. The items are then distributed to families, the elderly and the poor in the state. Also, the Lutheran Food Bank of Delaware develops and implements statewide feeding programs to assist children, students, low-income families, and individuals.
