City of Aurora Colorado water bill assistance.

Struggling residents of the City of Aurora, who are behind on their water or sewer bills, can get assistance. There are a few programs available that can provide some form of one time, short term help. The two main options in the city are the Water Cares assistance programs as well as emergency, one time grant based aid from charities or non-profits. Most of the financial aid is for homeowners, but some renters may qualify on an exception basis.

Water Cares assistance program - AWC

This is a service that is offered directly by the city as well as the water and wastewater companies. It relies on donations from the community, and the program in effect allows families or individuals to contribute to it on a one off basis. Struggling, low income Aurora County residents can only apply one time per year, and around $100 or so will be paid out (as funding allows). As far as donations, they can be made on a monthly bill (anyone can contribute) or residents of the county can drop by the Aurora Municipal Center Cashier's Office. Donations are income tax deductible.

The funds collected are for customers who are facing a one off crisis. Maybe they are struggling due to an unexpected job loss or reduction in hours. Or maybe they are in arrears on their water bills due to an illness, death or divorce of a key wage earner or some other unexpected bills. Regardless, the donations raised from Water Cares are used to help the family pay a small portion of their current or past due water or wastewater bill, and it can help them keep their service on.

Aurora Water Cares is also run in partnership with other local non-profits and even human service offices. The general income guidelines are the same as that of LEAP, which is an income of less than 165 percent of the federal poverty level. To apply for AWC, dial 833.559.2837 and either a customer service member will assist or referrals will be given to a local intake site, at which point help is given to apply for the water and sewer bill assistance program.

Charities in city of Aurora

The AWC (Aurora Water Cares) program is only one option. However it is maybe the most widely available. While low income families, seniors, the poor, and others can contact social service agencies as well as charities, the fact is that water bill help is not as common.

One option is the Spirit of Aurora. They collect donations for the AWC water bill program referenced above, but this non-profit can also refer the less fortunate to other options. Whether it is food, a job program, or money to pay water bills, this is a regional relief agency. They may also have suggestions on paying sewer costs.

Another leading charity to contact is the Aurora County Colorado Salvation Army. This is a leading charity that offers many programs. One may be some emergency, one time cash grants to pay utility bills. This may include water costs too, though it will not be a priority. However the Salvation Army can often address other needs of the working poor and vulnerable, so they are a resource. Find more details on the Salvation Army in Aurora.
