Transitional housing programs and homeless shelters in Chicago

Individuals who are faced with a crisis and the homeless can turn to an extensive network of community based homeless shelters and transitional housing units. The City of Chicago, Department of Family and Support Services coordinates many of these temporary housing centers for the unhoused across the region, including Cook County. There are also charities, churches and other social service agencies that offer support. The homeless shelters as well as some of the leading transitional housing organizations in Cook County as well as the city are listed below.

Types of short term housing and shelter programs in Cook County

Interim and Transitional Homeless Shelters are scattered around the city and they are available 24 hours per day to those who need them. Qualified clients can generally stay up to 120 days at one of these. Clients will need to fully participate in case management and support services. These programs will be customized for the homeless, whether they are single adults, pregnant mothers or entire families. Social workers will try to provide them the assistance they need during their stay, including substance abuse treatment if needed.

Transitional leading to Permanent Supportive Housing will both help individuals find a new home or apartment as well as help them acquire the skills they need to keep stable. There are qualifications in place that need to be met from applicants for the free temporary housing programs. This type of support can also be combined with section 8 housing choice vouchers in the city of Chicago and state of Illinois. As part of this process clients can learn about rental assistance programs, including vouchers. Learn more about what section 8 housing is.
