How to Save Money

Benton County Oregon Salvation Army emergency assistance programs.

Family services from the Benton County Oregon Salvation Army help the less fortunate. The assistance programs run are regional, meaning that surrounding counties, the city of Corvallis, and other regions are covered too. There is both emergency aid as well as basic needs, a thrift store, free food, holiday support, and much more.

Family Services

This is what the emergency assistance originates from. When there is funds available, the money can help pay for some of the following living expenses. It is one time crisis support only.

-Rent or maybe a portion of mortgage payments.
-Shelters are available for emergency overnight stays.
-Utility, heating, or water bills or deposits.
-Medications.
-Transportation, examples including gasoline or free bus passes.
-Expenses that can help address homeless.

The money is available as the result of donations, sale of goods at the thrift store, as well as United Way and government grants. The application process will require proof of income, residency, and hardship (copies of eviction letter, doctor prescription, job requirements, etc.) and much more. Funds are limited and first come-served.

In addition to giving out any money for helping to pay for bills, rent or housing, the Benton County Salvation Army will enroll the individual into counseling. This is a form of case management. As there is no use to assist with rent or say a gas bill unless the client has the ability to sustain themselves.

There will also be information on long term benefits given. As the emergency financial aid only goes so far. So a Salvation Army Family Service case worker will refer clients to say SNAP food stamps or SSI disability. The charity also advocates for the poor, provides advice on applying, and much more. They even have tips on applying for disability which often benefits many Benton County clients.

Thrift store, clothing closet, and food pantry in Benton County

These are the sources of all the other aid. Examples may be supplies as part of the Salvation Army disaster relief, Angel Tree Christmas toys and presents, boxes of groceries, clothing vouchers, and much more. Most of these Benton County Oregon Salvation Army programs rely on donations from the community. Without the contribution of say food to the pantry, or people participating in the Back to School drive, these programs would not run.

Each of the resources is specified in more detail below. In general, the goal is to never turn anyone away (such as from food, disaster help, toys, etc.), but with that being said, it does rely on donation. Some of the programs, including Angel Tree, do have application deadlines as well. So there are often criteria in place.

Thrift store – Sells low cost items, furniture, clothes, appliances, space heaters, couches, and more.
Clothing bank – This is similar to the thrift store, but the clothes given out are free.
Free food pantry – The Benton County Salvation Army feeds the hungry, poor, homeless, and low income with free meals and groceries.
Holiday programs – There are a few that give free Christmas toys, gifts, games, and more.
School – Free School items - Students from low income families can get backpacks, shoes, electronics, and more.
Disaster help – The Salvation Army in Corvallis offers water, food, and other goods.

As noted, the charity is at (541) 928-4774. The Benton County Oregon Salvation Army is in a nearby county. But it does extend its Family Services to this territory. Also the food pantry, thrift store, and other resources also cover the area.
