Allegheny County St. Vincent de Paul assistance programs.
Several churches are members of the St. Vincent de Paul organization in Allegheny County. They rely on donations and volunteers. Together these parishes may be able to provide assistance to the working poor and low income in the region. Services are also offered for senior citizens and children in the county. Resources offered are wide ranging and can include food, groceries, financial assistance, shelter, and home delivered meals for the elderly. Get information below on some of the leading churches and religious organizations in Allegheny County and Pittsburgh. They will offer help to people regardless of their religion, age, and background.
The exact type and amount of assistance will vary. It will really depend on funding and donations from the community. Many of the churches will only be open certain hours and days of the week as well and they more than likely will require an application to be complete.
Food pantries are located around the county. These may distribute boxes of free food or bags of groceries. Some centers may have special items to meet the requirements of a certain diet or they may have goods such as baby formula. Some of the churches that are involved with St. Vincent may also have vouchers that they can distribute. Recipients can use them to buy food at local retailers and grocery stores.
Meal deliveries may operate in certain parts of Pittsburgh or towns in the county. This is mainly for the homebound. The person delivering the food, who will be a Society of St. Vincent volunteer, will also be able to in effect check up on the elderly or disabled person as well and provide some form of companionship.
Direct financial aid may be offered in some cases. This mostly resolved around homeless prevention, so it would be funds for paying rent or utility bills. This is only offered as a last resort, in an emergency and to help resolve a crisis that was not caused by the family. Only a few select parishes in Allegheny County will offer this.
Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving programs may be offered in western Pennsylvania. For example, some St. Vincent affiliated parishes will take part in Thanksgiving collection for holiday meals and may oversee donation programs for toys and gifts for children.
Some examples of other services offered may include education and job training, elderly outreach, free clothing, winter attire, and more. St. Vincent will basically do whatever they can to assist the poor and low income in the region.
