Re: debt collectors call all the time
Hello, my name is Sharon.
I have recently separated from my husband after a Domestic violence and him being removed from the home and a no contact order set in place. After this I found out from debt collectors my husband had not been paying rent or credit cards and we were 17,000 in debt from the previous years. Since he was no longer in the home the landlord evicted me and my daughter, since then we have been living in my suburban and motel 6 in Everett Washington but our credit card was cancelled as the debts on it were so bad.
I am reaching out because a friend of mine told me you help with motel cost or shelters or the debt. I want collectors to stop calling as already under so much stress. And we are in need of shelter due to the cold weather we can't survive in the suburban. I am having an extremely hard time finding an apartment due to the eviction and could use any help available to me and my daughter, thank you for your time.

Re: debt collectors call all the time - what can we do?
Hi all,
For this entire thread, a few things. One is there are rules and regulations a debt collector needs to follow-abide by. They are listed here as well as programs on how to get help from debt collectors.
The other thing though is a call does not address the underlying cause of your hardship - excessive debt. Like the person here who owes $60,000, etc. You need longer term help, and look here for credit counseling programs that help with debt(s).

Summoned by a debt collection law firm
Hi, I reside in Putnam County, NY - 10537.
I have an issue in which I have been issued a summons by a debt collection law firm trying to get some money?
I just now am realizing that I am required to respond, and I have no idea how to fill out the form (I did not even know this) in essence I have a Debt Relief program I'm enrolled in since 6/2020.
The debt company being American Express Macys-also in the program, now I get the summons stating that it is Macys Citibank?!
So, the debt relief company is Guardian Debt Relief in NYC.
I have had no guidance from there - so I am a stay home Mom, my husband only provides and works - I do not receive any money from him as ever, only for groceries weekly in the amount of 150.00, and car and health and living in home maintenance only.
He had me do this debt relief for hardship reasons. Can anyone provide me assistance to get help from this summons, and guidance, and mostuunfortunately for ProBook Free - as I've no income at all for going 14 years. Please advise me-

Re: I need to stop debt collectors
49K in debt? That is a lot of money due. Can any of the 5 dependent people get jobs for themselves and help themselves? If not, good luck as you can't support everyone. Anyhow, there are debt assistance programs in Pennsylvania to try, and they can help with collectors and other bills or debts too.

Unfortunately I have recently lost everything. I am more depressed. I'm 45 years old and being swamped by debt collectors. I lost my income during this brutal economy and have been trying to catch up on $49,000 worth of debt for the past few years.
I have 5 people dependent on me earning money and I need some help for the basics. I have borrowed what I can (friends/family/Bank/market). I have spent all my reserves and now need whatever amount anyone is gracious enough to share with me.
Sorry I am today asking for help from the collectors. I would use any $ to pay bills so that I can get back on track. You have helped me tremendously, and have relieved my stress.
Thanking you
God Bless You.

Re: I need to stop debt collectors
I have debt collectors calling me about medical debts ranging to $9,000; I’m trying to repair my credit and get back on track. We are just way behind right now. Can you provide me with programs to help eliminate my outstanding medical debts. Thank you.
Re: I need to stop debt collectors
Hello,
It’s not a matter of needing help paying my bills as I have a payment arrangement set up. I need advice on how to prevent bills going to collections despite paying as agreed. I have been paying over a year on my medical bills based on the arrangement that the clinic and I agreed upon. I have had the payments set up on Auto Pay through the clinic twice a month totally $80.00. Of that $80 the funds are divided to various accounts according to the agreement. As a bill is paid off, I then take the funds used for that payment and add it to another bill creating a snowball effect in an effort to pay them off sooner. During the time these payments were made a few of the bills were sent to collections. It was my understanding, based on the information they shared with me regarding the payment plan, that as long as payments were made, and I was making an effort to pay the bills they would not be sent to collections. I have been in constant communication with the clinic, and I seem to get a different answer every time I talk to someone.
Is there anything I can do to bring back the accounts that were sent to collections in an effort to save my credit? If I am keeping the arrangement how is it the bills are being sent to collections (Two bills for my daughter—1 for $2.00 and 1 for $3.00 were sent to collections).
I would be appreciative if you could share any information at all in this matter.
Thank you

Re: debt collectors call all the time
I'm not sure where I should even begin with this message - but I figure I cannot find help unless I ask.
My husband has become a drug user - and he is also becoming very emotionally unstable. He abuses me mentally - and in the past there have been some physical issues. He has been the main supporter in our family for some time now; over the past year I have racked up a massive amount of debt because he took the car I used [in his name] from me [he already had a second vehicle] and I was obligated to obtain transportation considering we had a child together. I purchased a car which had more issues than I was aware of - and this brought me an insane amount of credit card debt from the repairs. I have had bad luck with my health and have had several visits to the ER, but because I was honest about reporting my husbands income as well as my own - I didn't always qualify for reduction and I have not been able to satisfy those debts. Not having insurance for a while made it rather impossible to avoid going to the emergency room.
The reason I'm explaining is because I landed a decent job with a law firm [specializing in evictions], but I cannot afford to get my daughter and myself out of our living situation due to my debts. I had to get a car for her and I to be able to commute to my mother who watchers her - free of charge because I cannot afford daycare. I wanted to know if you could recommend any programs that assist women who are you trying to better their lives without being an abusive household/marriage. The psychological toll that this is taking on me, especially the calls from the collectors, is getting to be way too much to handle... and I do not want my daughter growing up this way. She's three years old - she deserves so much more happiness.
If you could please give me a nudge in the direction I should go -I would be incredibly grateful. I'm located in Charlotte, North Carolina - Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Re: debt collectors call all the time
So the debt collectors appear to be calling for your medical bills and expenses. If so, consumers do have laws and protections for them. So you are protected from phone call, and also have some options available to eliminate and reduce your medical debts. Find a summary of medical debt collection laws, and the state of Florida is listed on this page too for you.

Re: I need to stop debt collectors
What I have recently discovered is that credit card companies are more willing to help people reduce debts and help them pay their bills. They need to do this as they want to collect some cash from you, and do not want to see you go bankrupt. They are usually known as hardship programs, and here is more info.

You can stop debt collectors. Your rights
Debt collectors have certain rights and laws they need to follow. They can't harrass you, call you all the time, send you countless letters. The federal government has guidelines for debt collectors that they need to follow. Here is a good resource and listing of debt collector rules and obligations.
