Re: Looking for help from Massachusetts nonprofit credit counselors

Use a non-profit - always the first option. There are even Massachusetts credit unions to use before one of those online "bad credit" lenders, as the interest on those can be almost as bad as the cards. Digital Federal Credit Union at https://www.dcu.org/ I think offers consumer loans and if your score is in the Fair range, maybe it will work. Call them at 508-263-6700. Maybe they can give you a consolidation/personal loan or at least tell you if your score and income are close enough to qualify. Not sure if Digital is open to the public or an employer group.

For the counseling piece, the American Consumer Credit Counseling is actually based in Massachusetts and is nonprofit. The website has a list of options at https://www.needhelppayingbills.com/htm ... usett.html

I am looking for a way to pay down my debt and improve my credit scores and read about nonprofit options. I know that there are debt consolidation programs, but that stays on your credit report for 7 years and leaves a negative mark for future credit. I would rather take out a personal loan and use that money to pay off my cards. That way I would have just one monthly payment at a lower interest rate in order to clear that debt within a few years.
Many banks do not want to work with me due to only having a Fair credit score ...... but that would increase as the debt was paid off. My goal is to increase my scores and decrease my debt at the same time but need some nonprofit willing to work with me to do this. Do you offer a personal loan option or know of any banks that offer that option in Massachusetts?
