Looking for bill help in Waterbury
Hi, my name is Charisse, and I’m from Waterbury, CT 06705. I am a mother of four children, ages 14, 9, 7, and 6, and I have a fiancé. We are in desperate need of help and will need to move by January 1, 2026, due to a mice infestation and electrical issues in our apartment. These problems have been going on since day one of our move-in back in April 2024.
I have been receiving Section 8 assistance since 2015. Unfortunately, I’ve had the worst luck with previous apartments. One was infested with bed bugs. I even had to call the health department, who forced the landlord to exterminate, but I lost all my bedding for my children and myself, along with other household furniture. It completely broke my heart to lose everything.
My fiancé and I moved out of that unit in February 2023 and into another apartment in March 2024. I even asked the landlord if there had ever been rodent issues, and he said no. However, before we moved in, the unit failed inspection three times due to electrical problems, leaving us bouncing between friends’ and parents’ homes until it finally passed. A month later, I saw a mouse in my room. The landlord admitted he had seen them as well and gave us traps, promising to fix the issue.
The problem eased in the spring and summer but got much worse during the winter. The house was later sold to a new landlord, and although she admitted there might be “field mice,” she only gave me dryer sheets and traps. These didn’t work. At one point, my fiancé even found a mouse in our dinner pot, which was beyond disgusting. We’ve caught at least 10 mice, but I still hear them in the attic. The new landlord has done nothing about this issue.
Although she fixed the recurring power outage problem, she ignored the rodent problem. Section 8 is aware, and I have documented everything with dates and times. My fiancé is on SSI/disability. We also receive food stamps from Waterbury social services and medical assistance, and my oldest son receives child support. My fiancé just started a new job, but we are expected to move in just a few days, and I don’t know what else to do.
I’ve spent hours researching programs to help us with housing and other bills in my area with no luck. I don’t receive cash assistance because I was banned for life after missing a class back in 2005 when my oldest son had pneumonia, despite having doctor’s notes. I had a job from 2023 to 2024 but was fired, and I suffered a work-related injury that causes severe migraines. I am currently in treatment so I can hopefully return to work.
I just want my children to have a safe home without rodents, without losing everything again, and without constantly changing schools. We barely have household items left. I pray you can help us during this trying time. If not, I still want to say thank you in advance.
Again, my name is Charisse, God bless.
