Re: Agencies for property taxes

We at needhelppayingbills always recommend to challenge your assessment and property taxes in order to save money. The process if free and is described in more detail here. http://needhelppayingbills.com/html/cha ... taxes.html People can save 10-30% on tax bills, especially with weak housing market. Get organized, call the assessor and go for it.

Sounds like in addition to the help with property taxes you have other needs. This link will provide info for the property tax help. Also, on this site you can find many additional programs and options.
http://www.needhelppayingbills.com/html ... erty_.html
For example, if you go to the state and local assistance program menu bar on the left, find NY and then Onondaga County. You will find a listing of other agencies and charities in Syracuse area that may be able to offer you with assistance and help with paying bills. FYI I use to live in Camillus NY...other side of Onondaga County, just west of Syracuse.

We owe in the house $ 47,000.00 for 30yrs. We bought it in 2007. If I take their offer is that putting a lean on my property? We live in East Syracuse, NY. I am looking for another job, and my husband being a teacher is looking for a teacher job, he is a teachers assistant with a masters degree. Cannot find a job in his field for 3yrs. We also owe the IRS, because when I had them done, I did not notice they did not input one of the W2 and so we got money, but not really, because I declared injured spouse, my husband owes $ 45,000.00 in student loans so they took his money and gave us for me $ 1,200 on one and $ 1,000 in another. We got the money and used for bills and were not aware until I went to my school and because of low income I go to school for free, I had to submit my financial aid papers and they noticed. I got it fixed and we ended owing back $ 2,300 which we are on a plan paying $ 50.00 a month. The next tax time if we get any money back that will be paid first. We cannot do $ 682.00 in our current income. My husband owes credit cards that he is not paying either, we do not have any money. I do not want to have my house forclosure, should we declare bankcruptcy? Where can I get help to find $ 6,000 to pay back taxes and put it on escrow and then mortage would be $ 550.00 that is better than $ 682. Please help.

I think try a couple options. It sounds like you are on a limited income. If so, you may be able to qualify for free legal advice. Massachusetts programs and attorneys can help you if you qualify. Here is more info.
http://www.needhelppayingbills.com/html ... assis.html
Also, maybe try a property tax consultant. If you go to the main site of needhelppayingbills, go the the Other Bills link on the left menu bar and then select Help With Taxes. A Property Tax Consultant May be able to help, and they will work on a contingency basis.

I am 61, live in Missouri and presently owe $2500.00, or more in real estate taxes. I could not pay for 2009 or 2010. Missouri has no real help with this matter, and their installment
program to pay it back is way too high for me to keep up. I make $1007.00 each month in retirement, and have $156.00 for my health insurance which is through my
former employer the Federal Government. And I have a $176.00 debt consolidation deduction for my charge cards which I used to pay for my Diabetes 2 meds and
other meds I have to take every day. By the time I pay my utilities, and other bills such as phone and internet and TV I only have about $300 left for groceries
and food stamps which help some. I am 100% disabled and live in a home I inherited from my late parents and their old but low mileage car which runs great.
I was in the hospital for 2 months in 2009, and let my friend have POA while I was an inpatient. He used the $1100.00 I was going to use to pay my taxes with to
pay bills that could have waited until I was discharged. I did not know of this until I got home and saw my bank statements. I had virtually no money left so this is
why I am in this predicament. Is there any way I could find some organization where I live to help me pay this off so I can get the $1100 again and add to it so
I can pay this bill every year, hopefully? From what I could find Missouri has nothing to help me. I tried calling the Dept of Revenue and they don't know anything
either. I don't want to sell my house and move into an area that I do not feel is safe. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I do surveys, but they pay very little and it accumulates very slowly. I cannot afford to accept the offers just to get paid because I don't have the money to
even join.

Re: How to get a Property Tax abatement

Post by Admin - Jon McNamara »

Many people are struggling with property taxes, as their home values have gone down but not there taxes. So many homeowners are also therefore overpaying on property taxes. For example, they may be paying for a home worth $400,000, but due to recent housing crisis house is now only worth $300,000. So you need to review your assessment and challenge it if necessary. Consultants can usually help, and will only charge you money if they save you money, so nothing to lose by trying.

There is no way I can pay these taxes and the lst installment of $526.03 is due by August 21st. I do not want to defer my taxes, as I do not want a lien on my property. Can you please help? What are my options? I would really like to have the Property Tax Abatement or some program that will erase my back taxes altogether. Installments do me no good as after I pay my bills, I have absolutely nothing left over. Please write me soon. I shall be waiting anxiously to hear from you. I am getting NO cooperation from the Assessor's Office or Treasurer's Office.

I am not certain of the different cities but check with your local city hall. My city hall offers hardship programs twice per year. You need to reapply every year, but if you qualify they'll either lower your taxes or give you an exemption from paying them that year. It's worth a try... not like they'll go any higher. And you may just be pleasantly surprised... Check with your city hall soon... Good luck

Usually you can contact the local government office and enter into an installment plan. Maybe some of that $900 / month you can put towards the installment plan. Also, try to lower your assessment, or take to a property tax consultant. Here is info on various resources and programs.

A few things/ideas.

-If you defintely have cash coming in later, try a low interest loan. Even try a credit card, then transfer balance to a zero% card. As long as you pay it off before rate increases! (this is critical)

-Contact a professional, but only pay them if they help save you $$ or home. Hire them on contigent basis.

-Also, challenge your property tax assessment. It is free to do. The National Taxpayers Union has estimated that over 60% of properties in the United States are overassessed. Probably even more so now with real estate prices flat or lower.
