Hi,
Yes, rents in Southern Cal and San Diego generally go up way faster than inflation. So a couple options - try this for our general list of San Diego rent assistance programs.
The City of Imperial Beach also has some options for residents and we found these here. Maybe they can help. https://www.imperialbeachca.gov/251/Housing

I am being forced out of my building as it was sold, and we all must be out by Oct. 31. I should get back my deposit, but it will only be $500 because my old landlord said it is what I paid. Many of the rentals in my area are not only $400 higher in rent than when I moved in, but deposits have gone up, too.
I very likely will have to pay $900 or more. I am on Sect. 8, but they don't help with deposits. I am also behind on my energy bill by a couple of hundred dollars. I don't know if I can get it turned on in a new place if I am in arrears. They told me it can't be past due, so I must at least pay the past due amount.
Do you know of any resources in my area other than HUD that could help? I have tried calling MAAC Project home energy assistance many times, but the line is always busy. Thank you for your kind assistance.
Sincerely,
Emily Willis

Hello Jennifer and the other post. We have many programs listed for rent help in San Diego, both the county and city. You can find them here. https://www.needhelppayingbills.com/htm ... tance.html
There are options such as a Housing Commission, Home Start, and even a place called Townspeople that help the low-income with both emergency rent assistance and long term help.

Rent assistance for place to live in San Diego

Post by Sylvia Harris »

I am living in unsafe living conditions here in San Diego and need new housing. There is an illegal sewer under the house that I was unaware of when I moved in 4 years ago. The sewer isn't supposed to be under the house, and it is leaking causing structural damage as well as mold. The city has came out and inspected and said the landlord is in violation of the foundation/structure and failed electrical inspection. Also, there was a bathroom built that wasn't permitted.
I have lived here 4 years and paid rent every month on time. He promised me he would never sell the house, but there are people that keep coming by to do "walk throughs" and one admitted he was a buyer and was looking to buy as the San Diego housing market is tight. He told me the house should be condemned and isn't buying it if course. I have 5 kids and I'm a single mom. I feel he is going to try to kick me out as he hasn't renewed my lease since he gave me a 1 year lease 4 years ago.
He always tells me to change the date myself, which I'm not going to do. I need to move into a forever home or need housing assistance but I don't have a down payment and I don't have first, last, security or a deposit. I do work full time. Is there any programs that can help?
