Emergency help for bills, housing, food and more

Salvation Army Hayward - The Salvation Army of Sawyer County operates a low cost thrift store and a transitional shelter program. They also administer another resource known as the Salvation Army Voucher programs in Ashland County, which can help provide a motel room, gas for work, and other support. Get help with rent, utility bills, food, and more. Or even locate free Thanksgiving dinner meals for the unemployed..

Another branch of the Salvation Army is in Burnett County Wisconsin. The phone number is (715) 349-8744. It can provide short-term emergency financial assistance and/or grant for individuals, families and people with no money in Burnett County. If you apply and are found to be qualified for help, individuals and families can receive up to $150.00 cash to pay for heating bills, rental costs, utility, or water bills.

There are also free vouchers for single mothers, seniors or the low-income. This can be for medical, prescriptions and gas (vehicle) assistance as identified and after all other resources have been utilized. Housing assistance is also administered, as the agency can also provides transitional housing short term for local families. The Salvation Army of Rusk County Wisconsin accepts applications as well for short-term emergency financial help, including for electric bills or back rent. There are also limited medical services for people who live in Rusk County who are in need of help. Also provides services for individuals and families in a crisis situation.

Taylor County also has a branch of the Salvation Army located in Medford. It provides short-term grants and other forms of emergency assistance, financially, health care and transportation. The faith based charity provides emergency shelter money, food and gas vouchers, and maybe car repairs too.

  • A low cost thrift store for clothes, furniture, and appliances is available too. They can refer people to housing and debt counseling agencies for either foreclosure prevention or debt reduction solutions. Dial 715-748-1456, (715) 748-3000 or (715) 748-3063.

Lac Courte Oreilles Tribal Services - The agency provides income subsidy, general financial assistance, health care, and medical benefits. Job skill development and career development is also provided. Call (715) 634-8934.

Housing Authority Taylor County, which is located in Medford Wisconsin, offers some housing programs including the HCRI, which is a Rental Program. The non-profit offer loans and/or grant money for 1st month's rent and security deposit, past due utilities, short-term subsidy, heating bills, debt relief and money for rent.

Indianhead Community Action Agency covers all regions in the area, including Taylor, Washburn, Sawyer, Burnett, Clark, and Rusk County. The non-profit agency will help by given out free clothing for adults or kids. There are also applications for Judicare, rental assistance, free vouchers hearing exams and eye glasses.

  • The goal is to help low-income, working poor families. The non-profit also has free emergency food assistance, hot meals, and vouchers for groceries. In addition, they are a great source for information, and can provide referrals to low income and disadvantaged persons of all ages. If an emergency need occurs for any Clark county resident, the help will be provided on a situation basis.

Other programs include Homestead Tax Assistance, Health care or other emergency needs that limits the resident's ability to function. There is financial aid for people with lack of health insurance, Weatherization, LIHEAP, and Indianhead can provide help until all other resources have been exhausted. Rusk County Lighthouse Shelter is a transitional housing - homeless shelter programs for adults, veterans, and people in need. Free clothes, a place to stay, and referrals to rent or security deposit assistance are some of the programs offered. The location is N4355 State Highway 27, Ladysmith, WI. Call 715-609-9600.

Coordinated entry of Sawyer County gives referrals. Tenants can learn about free lawyers to stop an eviction. Or get hardship grants for back rent, rehousing programs, or money for light or power bills. Call 715-263-2900

Clark County Housing Coalitions works to prevent homelessness, rehouse people, and ensure safe, equitable access to housing, including for people with past evictions. The intake lines are (715) 743 - 5233, (715) 743 - 5166 or (715) 743-3157. Also learn about apartments with eviction forgiveness.

Contact your local County Health and Human Services Department. Most of them will offer energy and heating assistance as well as free home repairs or weatherization services. Many also offer the Food Stamp Program (Foodshare), Medicaid, as well as the Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program, or WHEAP. Learn more on WHEAP applications. Food banks, pantries and assistance programs

Some of the locations to contact in the immediate area include Feed My People Food Bank (call ( (715) 835-9415), Community United Food Pantry helps by giving emergency food supplies for residents in Abbotsford, Colby, Unity, Curtiss, and Dorchester Wisconsin ((715) 223-2747),

There is also the Grantsburg Community Food Bank (dial (715) 222-4370), Greenwood Food Pantry ((715) 267-6205), Hope Lutheran Church Food Pantry ((715) 532-7739), as well as First Baptist Church of Medford (715) 748-4936).

Low priced or free medical care

Greenwood Wisconsin based Memorial Medical Center provides health care, education, and prevention to people with no insurance or the low-income. There are physicals, dental checkups and other free or income based medical. The amount of your bill is based on insurance coverage. The location is 201 S Main St, Greenwood, WI 54437. Transportation, including from an ambulance, is often needed to get a hospital or emergency clinic in rural WI. There are programs, and ways to get help paying for those costs. Another community clinic is based in Webster Wisconsin. It is called St. Croix Tribal Health Services. Some of the medical, dental and health services offered at the center include WIC and Honoring Our Children (HOC). The state funded HOC serves prenatal and postpartum women and infants to age 2 and their families. HOC provides health education, home visits, health case management, referrals, and group cultural and parenting.
