For low income families in the Wisconsin counties of Washburn, Burnett, Clark, Sawyer, Rusk, or Taylor, the Indianhead non-profit Community Action Agency can provide limited short term financial assistance along with self-sufficiency. The goal of the agency is to help people overcome their challenges and exit poverty. The main services are below.

Home repair and weatherization

HOME Homebuyer and Rehabilitation Program can both help people repair an existing home or buy a new one. The purpose is to rehabilitate, conserve and improve residential property that is owned and occupied by low and moderate income residents, including the disabled and senior citizens.

While more limited, the HOME Homebuyer program also provides low interest loans that can be used for paying closing costs or down payment assistance. This is an option to income qualified households wanting to purchase a home in the counties of Burnett, Washburn, or other nearby towns.

Weatherization services is a free conservation program. Assistance is provided to both landlords and homeowners by using the most advanced testing technologies and protocols available in the housing industry. The results of energy conservation will decreases the cost of heating and other energy bills for low income families in need. In addition to that, it will also improve the safety and health of their homes.

Examples of the Weatherization Services from Indianhead Community Action Agency include attic and sidewall insulation, Water heater insulation, furnace repair or replacement, Furnace repair or replacement, insulation, and Air leakage reduction.

Indianhead Community Action financial support

Free or low cost Legal Assistance for Victims Program provides representation for the following civil matters. It includes Divorce/Separation, Unemployment Compensation, Child Custody & Placement, Access to Fair and Affordable Housing, and a host of Immigration Issues.

Veterans in the region, including the counties of Sawyer, Burnett, Taylor, Washburn and others, may be able to get help from Supportive Services for Veterans (SSVF). This is offered in partnership with HUD as well as the U.S. Department of Veteran Services.

 

 

 

It will encourage housing stability and also provide case management to deal with the cause of the hardship. The objective is to help very low-income veterans, the homeless, and their families who reside in or are transitioning to permanent housing.

While resources can vary over time, some of the assistance from SSVF includes temporary financial assistance (for rent or security deposits), outreach, case management, and other support. Other short term assistance or grants may include funds to pay for application fees, moving costs, or the first month's rent on a new apartment. The goal is to rehouse the Wisconsin veteran.

Case management services from Indianhead Community Action Agency include short-term, focused guidance. This will ideally end up with the veteran moving into low income, secure housing. Homeless or Veteran families, or those facing imminent eviction, are assisted in locating and applying for permanent housing or apartments. Other case management services may include assistance in applying for income support (such as government benefits), referrals to non-profit community partners for job training or employment, and assistance in applying for united state government VA programs and services.

Education and job training is for adults in the region, including the counties of Burnett and Sawyer. So the community action agency offers tutoring and literacy to those that qualify. Examples of services include English Language and ESL, creation of Resume/Cover Letters, classes on Interviewing Skills, how to complete Online Job Applications, and much more.

 

 

 

Head Start is a comprehensive child development program that serves children from low-income families, ages 3-5, including children with disabilities. However, in some cases more moderate income families may also qualify for Head Start as well.

Students and children who are able to enroll into the Head Start program will be able to participate in a variety of development and educational activities. They are focused on social/emotional and physical development of the child. Nutrition and health are also an important component, and also the classrooms are equipped for a hands on learning environment.

Indianhead Community Action Agency wants to ensure the child has their health and nutritional needs met. So, to this end, Head Start offers medical care, free meals, and safety activities. The intent is to ensure the child is in position to be successful over time.
