Spartanburg County assistance programs

Help with paying rent, security deposits, and utilities

Over $600,000 has been granted to Spartanburg County South Carolina to help provide residents a variety of assistance programs.

The county currently has housing rehabilitation programs, homeownership, rent assistance, and homeowner education programs. A good resource to contact is the Spartanburg Community and Economic Development Department ((864) 595-5300). The county even offers credit repair programs and credit maintenance services, and increased funding for these plans is also part of the additional aid package being provided. There will be grants and funds also being provided and offered by local charities and other organizations, such as the United Way. You can contact them for additional information.

Housing Assistance Programs

In addition to the aid mentioned above, Spartanburg County will receive additional; government funds as a result of HUD's Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-housing Program. This additional money is will help those families who are faced with facing homelessness because of the weak economy. In addition, if someone is already homeless, it is expected to re-house families and individuals who are currently homeless.

The Upstate Homeless Coalition will be the lead agency. The Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-housing Assistance Program will provide three to 18 months' short or long term rental assistance to people who are faced with losing their home. The grants can also be used for a variety of reasons, including help pay security and utility deposits, electric bill payments, and even for hotel costs. Call the agency at (864) 585-6116.

Food assistance

Church Builders Food Ministry is one agency that distributes free food, groceries, and other items to households facing a crisis. Several churches have partnered together to offer this program. Call the agency at (864) 542-2895. Click here for more information on SNAP and food stamps.

Free HUD approved foreclosure counseling

If you behind on your mortgage or facing a foreclosure, Compass of Carolina Consumer Credit Counseling ((864) 467-3434) is one non profit housing counseling agency that may be able to help. The homeowner can work one on one with a housing counselor to explore all alternatives to a foreclosure filing, and help the homeowner modify their home loan. Debt management and assistance plans

Thousands of local families are hurting in this weak economy, and Compass of Carolina Consumer Credit Counseling offers consumers many different debt management and reduction programs. A credit counselor will work with the individual to discuss debt management plans, settlement programs, and other ways for them to get out of debt. They can even discuss arbitration. Dental assistance programs

Healthy Smiles of Spartanburg is a partnership of local dentists who have joined together to provide local children with free dental care, cleanings, and other services. Dial 864-592-4696.

General assistance

Salvation Army of Spartanburg provides financial assistance, and several other resources to help people make it through a difficult period. Get housing assistance and transitional housing, character building programs for youth, senior programs, and help for paying bills. Call the Salvation Army at 864.576.6670.

Greer Relief and Resources Agency offers the following. Utility and electric bill payment assistance is available for people who have received a disconnection notice. Food pantry can provide emergency food, and vouchers are also available. Prescription medication expense assistance: Low income and uninsured clients who are in need of prescription medication may qualify for partial assistance for their medications. Housing aid, in the form of rent and mortgage assistance can also be provide. Helping Hands of Woodruff South Carolina ((864) 476-2401) is a non-profit agency that provides emergency financial assistance with paying for heating and electric bills, access to a clothing closet, free food, heating bill program November - April (kerosene, 8:00am Wednesdays), rent help, prescription medicine and drugs and utilities. They also direct people to financial assistance programs from banks such as Wachovia and Wells Fargo assistance.

Greater Spartanburg Ministries runs a thrift store and provides new or gently used clothing; food, household products and items, limited emergency assistance with expenses such as heating/ cooling, -mortgage or rent, and -utility bill help. Call (864) 585-9371.

T.O.T.A.L. Ministries helps with the following - Food, clothing, life-sustaining prescriptions, and limited funds for rent or mortgages. Dial (864) 585-9167

Piedmont Community Action Agency. Numerous assistance programs are offered, including job counseling, basic computer training, case management, limited emergency financial assistance, energy bill assistance, including  LIHEAP and weatherization, the government Head Start program, rent and mortgage payment assistance, senior low-income housing complexes, and life skills training. Urban League of the Upstate - Spartanburg Office offers numerous services for African Americans and the working poor. Programs administered job-training services in office management and computer technology skills. A resource known as career link provides job seekers employment counseling, employability assessment, and assistance with job search. Job readiness workshops, resume writing, and GED classes are offered. Job seekers may be referred to the Business and Technology Center for employability training. Free medical care and health care services in Spartanburg SC

Patients can get free medical and health care from St. Luke's Free Medical Clinic offers free high quality medical and health care to the underinsured and uninsured Spartanburg County residents without duplicating any medical services that may be already available in the local community. The medical clinic will help people meet their need for primary medical care, patients can receive access to physician-ordered medications, free prescription drugs, and even pastoral support and patient education. If you can’t afford an attorney, and need help dealing with a civic legal case, South Carolina Legal Services (SCLS) is a non-profit law firm that provides a wide variety of free legal services and consultations. They can provide free legal foreclosure advice, advise a consumer on their rights in dealing with utility disconnections, and domestic matters, among other cases.
