There are several places to turn to for free or low cost Christmas toys, gifts and holiday food baskets in Hidalgo County. Charities, churches and giveaway programs including Angel Tree, Adopt a Family and free toys for Tots help low-income families, seniors and single moms. A number of programs are provided. There will also be Thanksgiving or holiday meals served, food boxes given to low income households, and small presents placed into Christmas stockings for children. Even if a charity can't assist, they may provide the resident with referrals to other holiday programs in Hidalgo County, including affordable thrift stores.

Free Christmas presents (which may be dolls, trucks, games, Legos, or other toys) will be provided to those families in McAllen and Edinburg TX as well as the county that meet income limits. Applicants should have proof of residency, income, and expenses. Meals are generally served to anyone that is needy, no questions asked.

A number of year round and Christmas programs are run. Free groceries for a Thanksgiving or Christmas meal are given along with Xmas gifts, clothes for kids, and other items. Toys for Tots of Rio Grande Valley and Hidalgo County
A number of churches, charities, and non-profits help low income families, single moms, immigrants and others. There are free Christmas toys, gifts, games, books, and more. There can be games, books, items like Lego, shoes, backpacks, and many other items. Kids from low-income families from age 0 to 15 can get free Xmas toys or unwrapped presents. Free holiday and Christmas programs from Police and Fire Departments
Local departments help people in their communities. They have free Christmas toy drives for kids, presents for the elderly, and small holiday events. Call 211 for more details on these programs as well as registration information.

  • McAllen Police Department Programs - They hold a toy drive during the year. Only residents of the city can apply, and the department will normally pass out the gifts a few days before Christmas to those with a voucher.
  • Brownsville Police Department Christmas for Kids toy giveaway - In some years, as many as 5,000 toys are provided using donations and contributions from Wal-Mart and other stores. Vouchers are given to to qualified applicants, and the child or parent will need to show proof of income, Social Security cards, report cards, SSI disability statements, or Medicaid forms, among other documentation.
  • Browsville Fire Department - They also run a Christmas donation program. It is similar to the police department indicated above.
