McAllen area Salvation Army assistance programs.

Families in Hidalgo County may be able to get help from the Salvation Army, provided they meet qualifications. With many people struggling from the challenging job market or unexpected emergencies, this is where the non-profit may offer some short term support. The main center is at 1600 North 23rd Street  McAllen, Texas 78501, call (956) 682-1468. Some general categories of assistance include the following.

Clothing, which is usually gently used, is available to children and adults in need. People may need school uniforms or work attire. Voucher slips can be issued for clothing, and are issued and redeemed at the Salvation Army Thrift Store in McAllen Texas. A related service known as Tim's Coats can provide winter coats to anyone in need of warmth, especially seniors and children.

Hygiene items are available in some centers. This includes offering items like Toiletry Items, pampers/wipes, Toothbrush/toothpaste, Shampoo/Conditioner, and Body soap.

A food pantry can help people on a case by case basis only. It only supports people in the greater McAllen area. Anyone outside of the region will be referred to a food pantry in their part of Hidalgo County for non-emergencies. An afterhours service may be available as well for a crisis.

In addition to a food pantry, soup kitchens are available. It is offered to low income, homeless, and needy Hidalgo County residents, and it can serve lunch and dinner. Breakfast is available as well, but is only to persons staying in the Salvation Army emergency shelter. Thanksgiving and Christmas meals may be served for free too.

Furniture donations are provided to members of the community on an emergency basis and upon availability. So people who can qualify include victims of a burnt home. They will, among other things, need to provide a verification of new address and fire report. Others who request furniture must provide a referral letter from a Case Manager, Social Worker, Case Worker, Nurse, or other professional informing a home visit was made and the letter needs to list specific items needed.

McAllen Canteen and Emergency Disaster Services can help those who are victims of emergency situations or a crisis whenever and wherever they occur. The Salvation Army will offer Canteen (Mobile Feeding Unit), Emergency Shelter, and a Soup Kitchen.

Rental and Mortgage assistance may be offered, and requirements for this emergency financial assistance will vary from grant to grant and is only offered if funding is available. In general, housing, rent and/or mortgage payment assistance is only available from the Salvation Army to those Hidalgo County residents who are having their homes foreclosed or are being evicted.

Utilities are offered as well. Once again, requirements need to be met and will vary from grant to grant and assistance is only offered if funding is available. Financial assistance can help pay water, light, or gas bills, and applicants need to have a disconnection notice.

Bus Tickets are offered for people who need to travel in the immediate McAllen Texas area. The Salvation Army will provide these if people need a ride to Job/Training/Employment, Support Services, and other Medical Services/Doctor Appointments.

Summer cooling assistance is provided from the Beat Heat program. It offers respite and assistance to those who need relief from the summer heat that can occur in Texas. The cooling program was designed to provide A.C. units for people with medical conditions, 20” boxed fans, and even very limited bill pay assistance.

AngelTree is overseen by the Salvation Army in Hidalgo County. It offers holiday shoppers the opportunity to adopt a senior or child through its Angel Tree program. It lets individuals, families and partnering corporations personalize a gift or a toy for a child or senior citizen in need. Volunteers and donors will adopt an “angel” and purchase gifts for that individual. Both businesses and individuals participate and contribute to the program.
