Ways to get help with rent, energy bills, and weatherization assistance
The local community action agency is Mahube Community Council. They have several resources and programs that can provide people with short term help. They can offer grants for rent, heating and utility bill funds, emergency shelter, and several other services.
People can get rent and housing assistance from the federal government Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program, which is administered by Mahube. They are providing several hundred thousands dollars in aid from this program.
The goal of the federal government program is to help people stay in their home and keep people from being evicted. In addition to eviction prevention services and funds, they also provide housing to those who are currently homeless or those who are at risk of becoming homeless. Money and grants will be offered for those who need rent help, funds for security deposits or emergency housing services.
There are some criteria to being eligible. Single adults, families and unaccompanied youth who have low to moderate incomes may be able to qualify for assistance with up to 18 months of rent.
Even if you do not qualify, still contact the Mahube Community Council as they may be able to refer you to other options. The organization could match clients with the program, another charity or non profit that best meets their needs.
Energy Assistance Program (EAP) - Mahube Community Council also offers funds for paying home heating bills. Households with the lowest household incomes and highest energy bills will receive the greatest benefit from the energy assistance program. Some of what is offered is emergency heating system repair or replacement, funds and grants that can help with paying utility disconnection’s or for necessary fuel deliveries, and they also offer energy saving tips and weatherization programs.
Head Start - This government funded program enhances both a child’s education and provides social programs, and also helps develop parenting skills by offering parents education in such topics as free dental care in Minnesota, child development, health and safety issues, nutrition, behavior health, and positive discipline. In addition, Head Start that is focused on children is offered as an educational program, and it was created to meet the child's individual needs and help them develop socially, with emphasis on health care, social and emotional growth, education, pre academic skills, self confidence, and learning.
