Saint Heart Catholic Church - Smithville, which is located in Smithville, provides the low to moderate income with emergency cash grants and financial assistance that can be used to help pay rent, CARTS transportation, and vouchers for prescriptions. Combined Community Action, Inc. is the local Bastrop community action agency. The assistance programs offered include the following.

 

 

 

Energy and Utility Bill Assistance - The agency runs programs that can provide for the payment of utility bills to prevent disconnection of service. The CEAP assistance program is currently divided into four main components of financial assistance, including energy crisis, heating/cooling assistance, elderly/disabled, and co-payment. The program may also be able to offer the replacement or repair of a heating or cooling device and also possibly a water heater, refrigerator, or appliance.

Weatherization Assistance - The federal government program provides for free energy conservation measures to a home or residence to reduce the energy usage and lower utility bills of a clients home.

Rent and Housing - The CCA community action agency serves as the local operator for the federal government HUD Section 8 housing assistance program. CCA also operates affordable housing with the rental of 18 single family units owned by CCA. They can also direct tenants to loan programs as well as affordable housing units.

Food and Senior Nutrition - The CCA also offers provision of hot noon meals, 5 days a week to 20 nutrition sites for senior citizens who are 60+ years of age. Meals, food, and groceries are provided at home and in a congregate setting to seniors.

 

 

 

 

Employment and financial stability - Bastrop County families can gain stability. Combined Community Action helps in this capacity too. There are other Community Action Agencies in Central Texas. They also can offer support services to those who are looking for self-sufficiency. They are a regional poverty fighting organization and are involved in administering low cost medical care, prescription drugs, and utility bill assistance to qualified low income families. Other programs can be referrals to housing needs, including eviction prevention. Or self-sufficiency from case management includes educational and job training workshops. Bastrop Christian Center can provide help to the less fortunate, and many services may be available. Depending on resources, housing assistance in the form of loans for paying back rent or a security deposit may be available. They also offer free food to seniors and the less fortunate.

Free or low cost medical care in Bastrop County Texas

Elgin Community Health Services, phone number (512)281-5520, provides low income men and women with primary health care diagnosis and treatment. Services offered by the community clinic include health screening and monitoring of blood pressure and blood sugar, medical visits, determine a health risk profile, provide preventive health education, and referral services to other local clinics and medical centers.

If any medical conditions are detected during the exams that are provided by medical professionals, patients will be given a voucher to take to one of the contracted health care providers in their local area.
