Below is a listing of the phone number to call in each state to apply for welfare. Callers will be provided information on the application process, requirements, and how much cash assistance they can be provided. Note that the phone numbers are generally only available during regular businesses hours.
Welfare will go by different names depending on what state a family lives in. The official federal government name for it is the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program. However other states call it different, such as California referring to welfare as CALWORKS or Ohio calling it OWF (Ohio Works First). While they the name may differ by state, they all operate in a very similar fashion.
All of the welfare programs will provide cash assistance for a limited amount of time. It will generally last as long as 60 months, provided the family meets the criteria in place around employment, income, and whether or not they have children. The representatives that answer the telephone calls at your states welfare office can provide more details on the specific terms and conditions.

When applying at a local human services office, people should be prepared with any questions they have as well as supporting documentation. This will help accelerate the welfare application process in your state.
