Welfare program application phone numbers by state.

Below is a listing of the phone number to call in each state to apply for welfare, also known as TANF or cash benefit. Each state calls the program by a different name. Callers will be provided information on the application process, requirements, and how much cash assistance they can be provided. Welfare will go by different names depending on what state a family lives in. The official federal government name for it is the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program. However other states call it different, such as California referring to welfare as CALWORKS or Ohio calling it OWF (Ohio Works First). While the name of the welfare benefit may differ by state, they all operate in a very similar fashion.

All of the welfare programs will provide cash assistance for a limited amount of time. It will generally last as long as 60 months, provided the family or single adult meets the criteria in place around employment, income, and whether or not they have children. The representatives that answer the telephone calls at your states welfare office can provide more details on the specific terms and conditions. Arkansas refers to it as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, or TANF. Dial 1-855-225-4440 Or find more details on the two Arkansas cash assistance programs.

California has different versions, including the most common of CALWORKS. Phone 916-657-3546.

Connecticut – Call the JOBS FIRST welfare program at 1-800-842-1508.

Delaware refers to the entitlements as A Better Chance, or ABC. Dial 302-255-9500.

District of Columbia (D.C) – Dial 202-724-5506 for details on TANF cash aid.

Kansas Works – Phone 785-296-3959.

Maine - TANF, ASPIRE (Additional Support for People in Retraining and Employment). Phone: 207-287-3707.

Massachusetts – Call 1-800-249-2007 for applications to ESP (Employment Services Program or Transitional Aid to Families with Dependent Children.

Minnesota Family Investment Program (MFIP). Human Services can be reached at 1-800-657-3739.

Nebraska - Employment First addresses welfare and job placement. Dial 1-800-685-5456.

New Hampshire's welfare program is run by the Division of Family Assistance. Call 1-800-852-3345.

Conclusion

As noted, the application sites are generally open Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm, but hours vary by state. Very few (if any) welfare offices take calls on weekends or holidays. When applying at a local human services office, people should be prepared with any questions they have as well as supporting documentation.
