Public assistance Wayne County and Detroit Michigan.

Individuals who are struggling may be able to receive help from a number of social services and cash assistance programs from the Wayne County Department of Human Services. Of course various conditions will need to be met by applicants, but the county is determined to offer aid and public assistance to as many qualified people as possible.

Get living expenses paid for, and help finding a job, from the Family Independence Program. Wayne County wants to ensure people can pay their bills over the short term, and also gain self-sufficiency. The resource offers short term cash assistance for pregnant women and families with minor children. Get public assistance for paying for food, heat, utilities, clothing, personal care items, and rent. The Jobs, Education and Training (JET) statewide program can help Wayne County residents develop skills or find a job, as well as offer assistance with childcare and transportation.

Disabled adults in Wayne County Michigan may be able to receive cash assistance and access to social services. Or their caretaker can receive help in supporting the disabled individual. Living expenses paid for can include housing, food, heating and utilities, some medical bills, and similar.

Food Assistance Program, or SNAP food stamps, can help low income families and individuals increase their food purchasing power. The Wayne County Department of Human Services (DHS) determines eligibility for food. However the program is funded by the federal government. Seniors may also be able to receive food vouchers and groceries from another public program, which is Michigan's Coordinated Access to Food for the Elderly (MiCAFE). This can also offer a Bridge card to help pay for medications.

Get help for utility bills from public and government programs including State Emergency Relief, Low Income Home Energy Assistance, and Weatherization.

  • LIHEAP offers federal money to help seniors, disabled, and low income families in Wayne County pay for heating and cooling bills.

Home Repairs are separately offered. This can help a homeowner address unsafe conditions or make critical repairs. This can include replacement or repair of a non-functioning hot water heaters, septic system, or furnace.

People who move to the Detroit or Wayne County Michigan region, and who are classified as refugees by the federal government, may be able to get medical bill help, health coverage, and cash assistance from the Refugee Assistance Program. If you do not qualify for FIP (TANF) or Medicaid, then this refuge program may be able to offer some short term assistance.

The Child Development and Care Program offered by the Department of Human Services in Wayne County may be able to pay for or provide child care. This is usually only offered for low income families who can’t provide for their child care on their own due to employment, a medical condition, or because the family is attending job training.

Home Ownership Services may help prevent loss of a home by offering such assistance as foreclosure counseling and non-profit credit counseling to Wayne County homeowners.

Moving expenses may be covered for individuals and families by a relocation assistance program. Funds for security deposits, rent, and transportation costs are administered.

Burial Services are offered by Department of Human Services. Get help with funeral costs when the decedent's family or their estate doesn't have enough money to pay for cremation or burial expenses.
