All assistance is arranged by the local SVDP (St. Vincent de Paul) Out reach center, which is at Saint Patrick. Using donations from the public, the faith based charity tries to prevent hunger, homelessness, and encourage self-sufficiency among other things. This involves financial help as well as material support, even including at the holidays.

Emergency help from Saint Patrick parish of SVDP

All funding is limited. There is a hotline – outreach call center open limited hours during the week. Financial assistance from the Saint Vincent in Black Hawk County can help with housing needs, back rent, utility bills and more. Or find other places that help with rent in Iowa.

Coordinators from Black Hawk County Society of Saint Vincent meet with applicants. This will be required in order to get help. The staff from the parish listen to the person's individual situation. Based on their need, background, and financial situation, the coordinator directs them to the resources that would be most beneficial for them. Some of them are available at Saint Vincent, and other programs are provided by partner organizations.

When it is an internal service, then the Waterloo Iowa St. Vincent de Paul Emergency Financial Assistance program provides help to solve basic needs. There may be some loans or cash assistance for to help with utility termination, prescription medications, rent eviction, or costs incurred from work related expenses, such as gasoline or car repairs.

There are some cases in which an individual (even an immigrants) needs help to obtain a new (or copy of) photo identification or birth certificates. If the client needs help with this for work reasons, the coordinator will assist. They can refer them to the local county court or social security office to get these items.

Saint Vincent free food, clothes, and holiday stuff

Winter jackets, hats, gloves, boots, work attire, and much more is part of what the Saint Vincent de Paul clothing bank has in Black Hawk County. This is a free service, with a focus on children as well as the elderly in the community. The charity collects donated goods from the community, and then disburses them. Many other supplies may be given out too, including basic household stuff such as utensils, pots and pans, and small cooking appliances.

Christmas help is also provided in Waterloo Iowa. The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, Saint Patrick parish helps low-income families during the holiday season. There will be free Christmas toys, games, clothes and meals. The elderly, or people in nursing homes or assisted living, will also get help such as visits from parish members.

For those that don’t qualify for free goods, then the thrift store is an option. This comes with a cost though. People need to shop there, though the prices will be more affordable. Note this location provides much more than clothes though. It may sell furniture, kitchen supplies, dishes, bedroom furniture, electronics, and much more. Locate a family thrift store near you.

The food pantry from Society of Saint Vincent de Pual has a few uses to it. Of course there may be groceries given out. Most of this will be non-perishable, but from time to time there may be some fresher foods such as fruits, meat, dairy, milk, Ensure for senior citizens or vegetables. The non-perishable items given out will be very diverse, and that depends on donations. But it won't be surprising to find cereal, soup, rice, spaghetti and sauce, PB&J, and more.

The second main use of the pantry is to give out, for free, non-food items. This will be so called personal items. Now the availability of these will be more variable. As it general hygiene items are more expensive, and therefore the donation levels tend to be less. But what there may be includes the following.

  • -Razors.
  • -Female products.-Soap, shampoo, and cleaning items.
  • -Supplies for the kitchen, such as paper products, towels, napkins, and the like.

There is also a free meal program in Waterloo Iowa. Saint Patrick parish members prepare, and serve meals, to the hungry, homeless and people with no money. All of these are part of hunger prevention in the community.

There are never any guarantees to getting help. The pantry may have some items on say a Monday, and then Tuesday or Friday those goods are gone...but replaced by something else. So the supplies change daily (if not even more frequently).
