Waterbury Connecticut regional St. Vincent assistance programs.

Some of the programs offered by the Society of St. Vincent De Paul in Waterbury Connecticut revolve around Neighbors Helping Neighbors, providing housing, shelter, meals, and non-monetary aid to the low income and homeless.

Short term housing and an emergency shelter has operated since the 1980s in the greater Waterbury region. It is the largest unit of its kid in Connecticut, and can help men, women, and children by giving them a place to stay and allow them to obtain case management. For example, the shelter also has a Day Care Program on site for women and their children. Or use the employment services in order to help find a job.

Over 100 people can stay in the unit, and on average an individual will be there for over 30 days. During this period the person or family will have a permanent place to live and a meal to eat, and they will sign up for longer term support as well as an appropriate assistance program, such as employment services or job training.

Homelessness prevention is a main goal of the St. Vincent DePaul Society of Waterbury, Inc. The non-profit and its case workers want to provide the highest potential of wellness to people, and help them move from poverty to a social standard of living. So St. Vincent works with local non-profits, charities, and government programs on preventing and reversing homelessness in the community.

They can work with the church, the State of Connecticut, and corporate sectors of society. Some of what can be offered includes shelter (see above), information on emergency rental assistance, section 8 vouchers, and more. St. Vincent DePaul and the churches are one of the leading Waterbury agencies to call if you are facing eviction or are currently homeless.

The St. Vincent DePaul Society Thrift Store is open up to 6 days per week. It offers clothing, school supplies, furniture and other material needs and goods for the poor and low income in New Haven. A case worker is available to assess the individual needs of each client. What is sometimes true is that a struggling family may be able to afford their rent or utility bills, but not, however, clothing, boots, furniture or household items. Or they can’t afford a winter coat for their child. The Society of St. Vincent DePaul Thrift Store helps people get back on their feet, become a member of society, and importantly maintain their dignity. The store is open to the general public.

Food and meals are offered from the Soup Kitchen and food bank. It is currently located on Main Street in Waterbury Connecticut. The St. Vincent Soup Kitchen allows the area's seniors, poor, and disabled to receive, at no cost to them, a nutritionally balanced hot noon time meal for free. The kitchen and food pantry provide over two hundred bagged meals of groceries six days a week as well as over four hundred served meals. The Soup Kitchen volunteers and manager also provides a referral service to individuals and families who express a need for additional assistance or resources.

One of the services in the Waterbury Connecticut area is helping students get the supplies they need for school. Saint Vincent de Paul may have vouchers for their thrift store (see above) which can pay for shoes, uniforms, belts, backpacks, notebooks, and more. This will be an income based service though. But in addition, the staff at the Waterbury and New Haven locations can refer the family to other local resources, such as the Salvation Army or churches that offer free items for school, as there are many local charities that try to help students from low income households.

Housing assistance is offered. One of the leading causes of homelessness in the greater Waterbury region is the lack of safe and affordable housing. Almost every city and town in the county of New Haven and also the state of Connecticut is affected by the rising cost of apartment rentals and home ownership. The St. Vincent DePaul Society of Waterbury, Inc., works closely with the State of Connecticut Department of Housing, and together they can direct people to rentals, apartments, or financial assistance programs.
