How to Save Money

Ulster County Salvation Army assistance programs.

Both short term financial assistance and long term support may be available in Ulster and Kingston from the Salvation Army. Hundreds of local families are faced with going hungry every month and many others struggle with paying their rent and energy bills. Case managers from the non-profit may be able to pass out cash for paying bills or housing, or money for addressing those these needs. They also more importantly help people get back on track for long term self-sufficiency.

For Ulster County families that are in serious need of help, those that are unemployed or who are faced with a crisis, the Salvation Army can help by being a buffer and short term crutch. Sometimes all it takes is a unexpected medical bill, a missed paycheck or two, or a cut back in hours at work. This can lead to a family being evicted, having their power turned off, sliding into homelessness, or going hungry.

Emergency Services from the Salvation Army are extensive. The programs and resources available were designed to help lower income families, seniors and individuals become stable. The options and available resources may be able to help give people get a second chance. Ulster County residents can get everything from financial aid for heating costs or rent to free advice.

Meals and food may be served. Programs that are available from the Salvation Army can provide free hot meals, snacks and drinks. Most centers in the New York region will offer this form of assistance. Or if the location doesn't have an on site food bank then they will have referrals. Also, during times of a disaster, these meal services can be performed at congregate feeding sites such as mobile kitchens in Ulster County, community centers, and even shelters.

Some walk in requests may be fulfilled from time to time. The offices are committed to the Ulster County community and they do what they can to help. Locations may be able to provide goods such as coats or toiletries to those who need them. If the Salvation Army doesn't have the item you need then they will refer you to a local clothing closet or thrift store. Find more details on free food pantries in Ulster County.

If you are struggling with paying your rent or are currently homeless, then some assistance may be offered. The usual, ideal solution is homeless prevention which can come in the form of funds for paying rent or utilities. If that is not an option, then look into shelter or transitional housing units. Clients of those programs will also be able to participate in ongoing case management with the goal of helping someone find long term housing solutions.

Any type of housing assistance offered is limited. Usually people will also need to participate in self-sufficiency programs, such as career counseling and credit repair classes. Also attend budgeting workshops. The Salvation Army offers help, but as a hand up and not a hand out.

Staff and volunteers from the Salvation Army also focus on older individuals in the community. Senior citizens can stop by a center to receive a meal or companionship. Many of these programs operate in partnership with New York Agency on Aging offices. The elderly may be offered free meals, activities at senior centers, and information on government assistance programs that are targeted at seniors, such as Medicare or the Extra Help prescription program. Sometimes items like fans or utility bill help may be offered during the summer.

Free Christmas and holiday programs are available to help bring a sense of joy and peace to children and families. There are also back to school supply giveaway events for students. The centers and Salvation Army work to ensure everyone has some form of holiday joy, in particular children and seniors. Resources offered may include free toys from Angel Tree and activities such as meals and other programs.Or their are backpacks, clothes, and uniforms for school.  The main office for these resource is 35 Cedar St  Kingston, NY 12401. Call (845) 331-1803 for intake.
