Some of the basic needs that can be met in Shelby County Alabama include emergency financial assistance, thrift stores, education and job training, and other social services. Qualified low income clients can meet with a social worker to explore all options and programs that are available to them.

The emergency resources are overseen by the Social Services Department. Clients of the organization can receive an assessment by a case manager to identify their specific needs. They can also apply for short term financial assistance to help stabilize their current crisis.

  • Housing assistance can come in the form of rent payments or information on landlord/tenant mediation.
  • Food assistance includes free meals or groceries.
  • Utility programs may be funds for paying water bills, natural gas, electricity, or winter heating bills.
  • Basic needs such as school supplies, backpacks, and Christmas programs are offered.

There is also an Educational Services Department in Shelby County. Those social services that are provided by the Education Department help to educate residents. The objective is to give them new skills and help clients with moving closer to self-sufficiency. Classes and workshops are available for GED preparation and tutoring services or job search assistance.

A key to overcoming poverty is budgeting management and financial literacy. So the program can provide credit counseling, information on debt reduction, and other financial literacy.

A program known as Shelby Teens for Effective Parenting is for teenagers that are residents of Shelby County Alabama. The STEP program meets on a weekly basis at a number of local schools and the classes organized are designed to directly impact the emotional and physical well being of parents. The lessons offered include prenatal and parenting topics. Shelby Emergency Assistance also runs a Thrift Store. This particular facility is located in downtown Calera Alabama. Call 668-3032. The non-profit Thrift Store provides assistance to qualified lower to moderate income clients who are need of household items, clothing, furniture and appliances.

The Thrift Store is open to the general public as well. Local shoppers, regardless of their income, can find and buy collectibles and great bargains. Customers in the region who stop by to shop are always informed about the other emergency assistance and social services provided by SEA. All profits raised from their purchases are used for financial aid and will help their neighbors in need. The thrift store can help victims of house fires, provide clothing assistance, furniture, and other household goods.

A number of other resources may be available. The Shelby Emergency Assistance program commenced operations back in the early 1970s and was really started from the efforts of local individuals concerned about the needs of the less fortunate in their community.

The first people who started the program, many who were volunteers, developed the basic philosophy that guides the services administered today. Any emergency assistance is also provided in close partnership with other agencies and non-profits, such as United Way of Central Alabama, churches, and charities. Many of these groups led the expansion of their to cover all of Shelby County.
