The Salvation Army has an ongoing program to provide assistance to Michigan residents with their utility and heating bills. The non-profit agency has almost 200 workers assigned to the activity, and they work from dozens of locations throughout the state.
The Salvation Army of Michigan is committed to helping individuals and families throughout the state pay their utility bills, and keep their service on. The aid will help people make it through a crisis or unexpected emergency, such as a medical emergency or job loss, and it is not an ongoing charity type program. Seniors as well as the disabled also receive priority from this assistance program.
They will accept either referrals from other human service agencies and government programs from your county or town, or they will advice people through a telephone inquiry. Or you can always decide to stop by you local Salvation Army office for an in person request.
After you are referred to the Salvation Army or initiate the request for help, you will need to go through the review process that they have in place. The agency knows that each person has a unique situation, and the individuals shut off will usually involve a complex set of circumstances. So the applicant to the program will receive more than just the processing of their application.

You will meet one on one with a caseworker. They will interview you, and review your entire financial and personal situation. The casework assigned to you will try to identify the often multiple factors that may be contributing to the household’s emergency situation. They will provide various forms of assistance, including referrals to government programs and charities, budget and basic debt counseling, and emotional support as necessary to the individual. This holistic or all encompassing approach that is being followed by the Michigan Salvation Army of meeting a need wherever it is found allows The Salvation Army to provide effect assistance. The agency is therefore able to help families and individuals with their utility and heating bills in a way that reduces the likelihood of future crisis, and, in many cases, prevents homelessness of the individual. The Salvation Army caseworker will work directly with your utility provider to assist you, and help you avoid a shut off of your service. So they will negotiate and explore your options, which helps takes the stress off of the applicant. The caseworker can also advice you on other ways to get help and avoid a disconnections, such as heating oil bulk buying plans and organizations, as well as how to get free heating oil.
