Emergency housing is offered to qualified families across Oregon. A number of different resources are administered, including the Housing Stabilization Program as well as the Emergency Housing Account. While the specifics of each and every emergency housing program will vary, in general the primary goal is to prevent homelessness. The staff from the administering agencies will also help people find new, safe, and affordable housing or apartments in Oregon. This goal is accomplished by offering emergency cash assistance to pay rent, security deposits, or a partial mortgage payment. Free case management, advice and counseling is another key service, as well as landlord/tenant mediation.
The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) provides funds to the state of Oregon as part of the Emergency Shelter Grant Program. The state then distributes the money to non-profits across the region, including community action agencies, local housing authorities, and non-profits like the Salvation Army. The monies are distributed to help prevent homelessness by paying for prevention tactics, like rental or mortgage assistance.

One of the keys is to help Oregon people pay rent and housing in an emergency situation. This can include tenants with an eviction or the homeless that are at risk. Funds may be used to provide homeless prevention activities which can include financial assistance to eligible families for paying security deposits, utility bills, home loans, security deposits, or back rent expenses.
The Shelter Grant Program also provides social services. The low income and the needy can access services such as employment assistance, housing counseling and case management. This is used to help stabilize the client. Other social services include health care, drug abuse treatment, networking, assessments, and education.
Another resource available is the State of Oregon Homeless Assistance Program. This allows the government to fund emergency shelter and auxiliary service, and activities may include personal hygiene, nutritional assistance, and referrals.
The Housing Agency can provide information on the federal government funded section 8 housing voucher program in Oregon. This government created service usually has a long waiting list. When it is open it can place families in affordable housing units, and limits the amount of rent they need to pay towards housing expenses.
Families with children who need emergency housing assistance in Oregon may be able to receive help from the Housing Stabilization Program. This resource can assist lower to moderate income households with children who are at risk of becoming homeless or who are currently without a place to live today. This particular stabilization program is a partnership between Children Adults, local lead agencies, non-profits, and Oregon Housing and Community Services as well as the Families Division of Oregon Department of Human Services.
Last, but not least, The Emergency Housing Account Program can assist persons who are homeless today or who are at risk of becoming evicted over the near term. Aid is targeting the disabled, those who are elderly (65 and older), farm workers, or Native Americans that live in rural Oregon.
