Salvation Army emergency assistance programs Onslow County.

Residents of Onslow County have several Salvation Army centers they can turn to for support. They are mostly located in the city of Jacksonville North Carolina but families can shop at the thrift store or apply for emergency assistance, including funds for paying bills, clothing, and rent help too.

With the exception of the Family Thrift Store (which is open year round for the entire community), most of the assistance is available on a one-time basis. The Social Service Department may only offer financial aid on a case-by-case basis for short term needs. The Jacksonville North Carolina center may offer money for costs such as energy bills only if the family has a source of income and does not seek help multiple times.

Other Salvation Army services in the region require a referral from the Onslow County Department of Social Services. Anyone that wants to use the food pantry or clothing bank at the site needs to have this referral from a case manager at DSS. These programs are not available on a walk-in basis.

One time financial assistance

There are three programs that fall into this category. An appointment is always needed and applicants should bring proof of income, residency, copies of their budgets, and other supporting documentation. Each request for a cash grant is reviewed closely.

If the family has applied for financial aid from the Jacksonville Salvation Army multiple times they will not be qualified. Financial help is only offered one time only. There may be emergency funds for the following.

  • Utility bills – There may be money for paying electric, heating, or water bills to stop a shut off.
  • Housing costs, ranging from rent to a security deposit, may be covered.
  • Medical needs - The Salvation Army has limited vouchers for medications or the social worker can refer the clinic to dental or health care clinics. Find other sources of free dental care, both locally and nationally.
  • Veterans and military members may be referred to benefits for their needs, such as SSVF for rent and VA benefits.

Since applications individuals reviewed, and funding is limited, they will make decisions on priority. With the large number of military service members in Onslow County, they (along with their families) may often be given priority for financial assistance. Additional focus is on homes with children as well as the elderly.

Free Christmas gifts may be issued as part of Angel Tree. This is an annual holiday giving service that normally supports hundreds of families per year. Not only may the kid be given a free toy or price of clothing, but the entire low income family can also be giving a Christmas meal. The Salvation Army in Jacksonville also serves (or passes out) a free Thanksgiving turkey dinner each year.

The two Family Thrift Stores sell gently used items too. Their addresses are 204 Wilmington Hwy.
Jacksonville, North Carolina 28540 as well as 403 A Center Street, Jacksonville, NC 28540. Dial 910-577-5060. Whether it is furniture or clothes or household goods, anyone can shop there. The savings that every family will experience can be very extensive. It is a good place for military members to shop as well as they set up a home in Onslow County.

In a disaster, the Onslow County Salvation Army provides support to both first responders and the victim of a disaster. Whether it is a hurricane or a family losing their residence to a fire, help is available. They operate a canteen that serves meals or passes out clothing and blankets. The social workers from the Salvation Army also place victims is a disaster, provide them with counseling, and get them back on the patch to stability.

Salvation Army programs in Onslow County that require a referral

There are a few programs. They will both feed and clothe people. The food bank in Jacksonville may pass out free groceries, supplies for cleaning a house, baby formula, and more. This site is used to feed hundreds of families per year.

A clothing closet is also available. While there can be some year round, surplus items given out, most of the help is for either job requirements/interviews or kids can get free back to school supplies or uniforms. Some of them, such as the back to school donation program, are seasonal in nature.
