Eviction prevention and landlord/tenant issues

Housing counselors are available to help families across the region deal with rent issues and other landlord problems. Oakland County Housing Commission offices have counselors on staff that can help people who are faced with an eviction from their landlord. Also get help if your landlord will not make needed repairs to your home or apartment. Other issues that a counselor may be able to assist you with include if your landlord refuses to return all of your security deposit or unsafe living conditions. There are laws to protect you from these various housing issues.

 

 

 

 

Among other services, the Housing Counselor may be able to provide information and education on tenant and landlord issues including security deposit law, lease agreements, and evictions. Non-government subsidies for low cost housing and financial assistance with security deposits, utility payments, and/or back rent may be offered. Oakland County Michigan also has in place Fair Housing laws to protect residents. For example, renters need to know that it is illegal for apartment complexes, real estate agencies, and property owners in general to turn a person or family away from housing solely on the basis of their race, color, religion, national origin, sex, handicap, or family status. A Home-Buyer Counseling program can assist those individuals who want to buy a home but don't know where or how to begin the search from. Various Housing and Mortgage Counselors will work with potential homebuyers to determine if someone is ready for homeownership.

You can get advice on how much down payment you will need, what you can afford, and ways to improve your credit and reduce various debts. In addition, Oakland County Michigan specialists will also explain with borrowers the differences between various types of home loans and mortgages, advise on how to apply for a mortgage and how your application is reviewed. Factors to consider in picking a type of home and neighborhood are covered as well as how to make an offer on a home, how to work with a realtor or buyers agent, and what the closing process is all about.
