Salvation Army assistance programs Mechanicsville and Hanover County.

Much of the assistance from the Mechanicsville and Hanover County Salvation Army starts with case management. A social worker meets with the applicant to go over their short and long term needs. Based on this assessment, everything from emergency one time rent or utility bill help may be given out along with free food (or Christmas toys for kids), clothing, vouchers for medications, back to school supplies and other support. Of course the client will also have their long term needs addressed through a goal based case management process.

The goal here is to empower clients. Social workers partner with clients to help them get on the path to long term stability. If needed, some emergency support will be given to get the client on the right track. What may be offered during this process is as follows.

Seasonal programs

Holiday meal programs – They offer free Easter baskets, Thanksgiving turkey meals, and also food at Christmas.

Adopt a Family and Angel Tree – Residents of Mechanicsville and the surrounding counties of Hanover buy toys, clothes, games, and gifts for families in need. Most of the free Christmas gifts go to kids from low income families.

Free back to school supplies – During the summer as well as early fall months, everything from uniforms to clothing, backpacks, shoes, and other school supplies are given out.

Emergency Financial assistance

The Salvation Army tries its best to meet these needs. It will be one time assistance, and requires contributions towards the bills by the applicant too. What may be offered, as funding allows, is the following.

Rent help – This is if the tenant is close to eviction (or they have a pay or quit notice) and if the home/apartment is affordable over the long term.

Utility bill assistance – This may be for heating, gas, electric, or light bills.

Medical needs – The Front Royal Salvation Army may give out free vouchers for prescription drugs, loan equipment (wheelchairs, crutches, etc.) from the thrift store, and give other support.

Free emergency food pantry – This will of course have bags of groceries, but there may also be household cleaning supplies and other goods.

Homeless – They can use a shelter, in which hot meals are given, clothes, as well as other supplies. The Salvation Army will work with the homeless to eventually get them into permanent housing.

Family Store – This is the low cost thrift store. The Salvation Army sells furniture, electronics, vintage goods, and more. The money raised goes to fund the financial assistance programs from the charity.
