As part of the application process at SVDP in Bloomington Illinois, the staff or volunteers at Society of St. Vincent de Paul Holy Trinity Conference will provide one on one contact to better understand the needs of the client. In some cases, the staff will also conduct a home visit if the person is elderly or disabled. Or they may also stop by the home or apartment to understand their needs.

Based on the results of this review, aid will be provided across McLean County Illinois. There are instances in which Society of Saint Vincent de Paul receives funding for programs such as food or emergency heating and utility bill assistance. Or they may be resources such as job training or rental assistance. Most of the support is for those individuals or families who have shut-off notices, an eviction notice or may be in danger of running out of fuel. Or SVDP offers free food or clothes. The applicant will also tend to need an income to receive any help.

Society of Saint Vincent McLean County community food pantry offers help in a crisis for residents in the city of Bloomington and county of McLean County. There are a number of low to moderate income households that are assisted throughout the year. Food is provided when a families monthly budget runs short and emergency supplies are needed. Considering the ever rising costs of groceries, that has made it difficult for many households to make ends meet. So there may also be assistance for single moms (such as baby formula), holiday meals, and more from the McLean County pantry.

The free pantry receives donations from the Regional Food Bank, Feeding America, parish conferences /churches and individual donations. There are also countless volunteers that donate their time and energy. There is support from schools, senior citizens, local churches, and businesses that also all contribute to the success of the pantry. There is also free fruit and vegetables during the summer from the St. Isidore’s Garden.

 

 

 

Senior citizens in McLean County Illinois are the main beneficiaries of the Home Delivered Meals service, otherwise known as “Meals on Wheels”. This is also an option for the disabled.

St. Vincent de Paul Conferences in Bloomington sponsored volunteers will bring a hot meal to seniors who are unable to leave their homes. There is a small suggested donation for the service, but it is not required. Another program is the Meals While You Heal for the elderly who have been recently released from a nursing home or hospital. This will help them recover in less time.

A Congregate Dining Program will also serve meals that exceed one-third of the USDA Recommended Daily Allowances of nutrients needed for older adults. These services are held across McLean County. Among other things, it will prevent or delay of chronic diseases and disease related disabilities. There are also special meals served by SVDP, such as diabetic food, ground, and pureed meals are also available for those with dietary needs.

Emergency Assistance is for families to help them gain stability and address short term challenges. While there may be some funds or loans for expenses such as medications, rent, or energy bills, the goal of the funds is to pay for expenses associated with self-sufficiency and to limit a clients future need for help.

As part of this SVDP process, an experienced Self-Sufficiency case manager will work with the applicant to assess the need and what the emergency is. They will then give support and advice to  stabilize the situation and at the same time, develop a plan to prevent future emergencies. This can include employment, information on government benefits, and other solutions.

Relevant documentation, including proof of income and the crisis, is required from anyone applying for financial assistance. They will also need to pay for some of the overdue bills as well and contribute. Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, and really no non-profit, will ever pay an entire expense on behalf of a client. Funding for these programs comes from many sources, including Emergency Food & Shelter, Low-Income Weatherization, LIHEAP government grants in Illinois, and others.

 

 

 

 

SVDP of Bloomington also helps with other needs, specifically employment, clothing, and holiday. One program available is Dress for Success, and this will help the unemployed and underemployed by addressing their economic needs. They may be given a suit for a job interview. Then, either free or low cost business-appropriate clothes will be given to the client once they land a job.

In general, the career services is customized to help each client both enter into a new job and advance within that industry. Classes help with overall confidence building from practice job interviews. More practical support, such as clothing or vouchers for a bus pass or gasoline, are also given for local travel in McLean County.

Clients for these Society of Saint Vincent de Paul services come from the working poor, shelters, and others. The unemployed, who are on a path to self-sufficiency, can also get support. Or even find other transportation programs, including churches or charities for free gas cards.
