Society of St. Vincent assistance programs McHenry County.

A leading charity in McHenry County Illinois is the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul. Churches and the volunteers work with the faith based group to provide assistance to the needy. Food pantries, thrift stores, and minimal amounts of financial aid may be offered in a crisis, and some of the primary resources from the charity are below.

When it comes to stopping hunger, a partnership of pantries and soup kitchens can provide free food, groceries, and hot meals to the needy and low income. Emergency bags of groceries are also supplied to at-risk, in need individuals and families. Some volunteers of the church will also deliver a fresh hot meal, or maybe frozen food, to a senior citizen or the homebound. So various resources are available.

Volunteers work at many of these distribution centers, and they also rely on donations from the commodity or surplus USDA items. Participants who stop by a pantry are also educated what resources are available to assist them.

Thrift Stores from the society will offer residents of McHenry County of all income levels and backgrounds the ability to save money. They will sell high quality donated furniture, clothing, appliances, holiday toys, and other household items. The goods are sold at a low price to the public, and the money raised will be to pay for the financial aid programs that St. Vincent runs.

Emergency financial assistance is offered as a last resort. There may be funds available as a last resort, with a priority given to addressing a health or safety issue. There may be money available for housing expenses such as rent or utility bills. In some cases, a partial mortgage payment is made. While the Society of Saint Vincent will try to offer direct financial aid, in other cases loans are used by the charity.

Many resources from churches are focused on preventing homelessness or preventing a medical crisis. So those applications will be prioritized, however many people do need to be turned away do to limited availability. So the financial aid referenced above is very limited.

All across towns such Woodstock or Richmond as as well as the county of McHenry, many churches and other charities sponsor children and seniors around the holidays. These will provide Christmas presents, hot meals, free toys, toys, clothing and other items. All of the holiday programs are free to the needy and low income.

Referrals to both non-profit and government aid is available. They partner with other local outreach and non-profit programs in McHenry County. The society can often provide information on where low income and unemployed families can turn to for help. There are addresses and phone numbers to community resources or social service offices, which allow people to apply for aid such as food stamps or disability.

Directing clients to long term stability and support is also a core function. So case management is offered to applicants, and this will help people with setting goals, finding jobs, and more. For those looking for employment, they may receive clothing, including suits, or work boots. Basic needs to prepare the person for the job are offered too, such as dental cleanings or transportation to and from work or the interview.

In order to help meet these goals, the Society and its staff will also coordinate local job training programs, such as workforce development. This will help people obtain new or better skills, or increase their educational levels. These types of programs are offered across McHenry County, and are key to self-sufficiency.
