Free food banks, groceries and pantries in Kankakee County.

The Kankakee County region is supported by a number of free food pantries, soup kitchens and emergency food banks near you. The organizations, most of which are run by non-profits or charities, work to feed the working poor, seniors, and vulnerable. They provide free or low cost food each day, personal hygiene supplies, help at Christmas, clothes (when available), hygiene supplies and other support. Many charities also operate soup kitchens for free hot meals, including at lunch or dinner.

Each organization will recommend that people call before stopping by. Find a referral number at the bottom of the page as well. The pantries are open limited hours and may run out of supplies. Also, the type of assistance provided will vary. While almost all of the Kankakee County centers have food, groceries, or items such as baby formula, only a few have other basic needs such as the following.

  • A food bank may also have free winter clothing for kids or work attire.
  • There may be holiday meals or gifts as well as free Christmas toys.
  • Seasonal aid may be Thanksgiving turkeys, food baskets, and more. Or Christmas food baskets are passed out too.
  • The homebound can get free Meals on Wheels services.
