Joseph House Crisis Center assistance programs.

Emergency assistance is available from the Joseph House Crisis Center. They offer a wide range of programs. One of them provides cash for paying bills, and other services include shelter from the Hospitality Room as well as a food pantry. Assistance is available in several Maryland counties, including Dorchester, Wicomico, Worcester, and Somerset. They also provide help in Delaware as well as Accomack and Northampton Virginia. This region is known as the Lower Shore.

The main mission of the Joseph House Crisis Center is to bring a sense of hope and comfort to disadvantaged clients. By providing a wealth of support, the goal is to end their homelessness or dependency on public benefits and lead them back to a life of total independence.

The non-profit offers assistance for low-income, vulnerable individuals. There is help both on an emergency or consistent basis, depending on the applicant's needs. The Crisis Center served poverty-stricken people in areas from four different departments they run. They include Funding Assistance (or cash), the Dining Room, the food pantry, and the Hospitality Room to welcome homeless individuals and families.

Cash assistance programs from Joseph House Crisis Center

The Cash Assistance program from the Crisis Center specifically provides funding to prevent evictions or stop an interruption in utilities. There may also be money to cover health care costs and other emergency situations for those struggling in the community. This resource is available for anyone (men, women, elderly and their children) with no other alternative available to them. It is offered in all counties, including Dorchester, Someset, and others.

Requests for emergency assistance are honored via an applications and evaluations performed by volunteer staff. These individuals try to determine the best way to offer help for vulnerable members of the community. All funding for the Joseph House is strictly from private donations, not through United Way, the state of Maryland or the federal government.

All financial aid is first come and served, and proof of I.D. and proof of income/expenses is required as well. In addition, those low income families with dependent children must bring a denial slip from the Department of Social Services, whether it is Maryland or Virginia or another county. Or find other cash assistance in Maryland.

Free food, meals from “dining room”, and social services

Dining Room serves a free hot meal to a few days per week. Everyone who comes to the center is offered this service with an average of about 100 meals served on a daily basis. The serving and preparation is done through a rotation of dozens of churches in the Salisbury and Accomack County area. People from all different religions and background working in Dining Room and serve those less fortunate in the community.

A day shelter at the Hospitality Room is offered at the Crisis Center for any man, child or woman who is homeless. In addition to having housing during the day, these vulnerable people have access to food, clothing and items to meet their daily living needs. Showers and bathrooms are available for bathing and washer/dryers are available for cleaning their clothes if needed.

While seeking shelter in the Joseph House Crisis Center Hospitality Room, the homeless and others get support. Clients can also include those struggling with mental illness, substance abuse, or debilitating physical conditions, and they are all offered much needed support and acceptance. Oftentimes, clients simply need rest especially if they are sleep deprived from being on the streets, or they just need a free meal. If the Hospitality Room is full, then find other homeless shelters for stays.

The food bank at the Crisis Center will provide bags of groceries to supplement a struggling individual, senior citizen and/or families food supply. This assistance is given on an ongoing monthly basis to many in-need, vulnerable people. Another key fact is that children make up a large percentage of the clients who get aid from the pantry.

Most of the food passed out is coming from donations from churches, charities, area businesses and citizens of the community. Groceries are also purchased via funds specifically donated to the Food Pantry at the Maryland Food Bank.
