Hunterdon County assistance programs.

If you live in Hunterdon or Flemington New Jersey, and need help, contact the local community action agency, NORWESCAP. Learn about the assistance and services they offer below, as well as other options.

Home energy bill and conservation programs

There are several different programs run by NORWESCAP that provide electric, heating, and utility bill assistance. The resources include those listed below.

Universal Service Fund (USF) - This program was created by the state of New Jersey, and the USF assistance program was to help make home energy and heating bills more affordable for low to moderate income customers in the area. The program will provide funds to assist eligible low income households to lower the amount that they have to pay for their monthly gas and electric bills.

Weatherization - This is a federal government program that was created to assist handicapped, elderly, and low-income persons in conserving energy and weatherizing their homes.

Home Energy Bill Assistance - This is a program that provides cash grants and funds to help qualified households in Hunterdon County pay their energy and heating bills. The financial assistance and grants are made directly to the utility company or fuel vendor.

New Jersey Shares - This assistance program provides financial assistance to people who are in need of temporary help in paying their home utility bills. Applicants to the NJ Shares program must have a shut-off or termination notice and they can’t be a participant nor be income eligible for any additional types of utility bill assistance. More.

Short term, loan interest loans

The community action agency also provides struggling families and individuals with low interest loans. They offer the Family Loan Program. The loan must be repaid within two years, and the rates offered are very low. Some of the uses for the loan can include Car Purchase or Repairs, Loans to make a Housing/Rent/Mortgage/Security Deposit, or to pay for a child care expense or bill. Other programs

While the community action agency can process applications for utility bill assistance in Hunterdon County, they offer other aid as well. Some examples include free food from regional pantries, housing and rental assistance, and educational services. Other programs for children are summer lunches and snacks as well as Head Start. Assistance with paying rent, bills, and get other aid

Call the Flemington and Hunterdon Salvation Army for advice and assistance. From time to time they may have funds they can offer people to help them pay rent, housing expenses, and they can always offer advice and referrals. Dial (908) 237-9008.

Interfaith Hospitality Network of Hunterdon County provides rent help. The program is known as the Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-housing Program (HPRP). It offers low income and qualified individuals with case management; funds for security deposits, temporary financial assistance for paying rent, moving expenses and costs, heating and utility bill payments, debt counseling as well as credit repair and free legal services and advice. Catholic Charities is a non-profit organization that administers assistance programs that can provide low to moderate income individuals with one-time emergency and financial assistance for making utility bill payments, funds for car repairs, prescription medication and drug assistance, child care payments, and other forms of financial aid. Soup kitchens and food banks in Hunterdon County

There are several charities that coordinate resources to feed struggling families. Some of the locations have income criteria in place, other pantries will assist residents as long as they are in need of food. In addition, many locations also serve Christmas or Thanksgiving meals, offer hygiene items or Christmas meals/gifts, and much more.

Saint Ann's is a church in Hampton. There is a food pantry and clothing center. Call (908) 537-2221.

Open Cupboard of Clinton is located at 37 Old Hwy 22. Call (908) 730-7320. Assistance includes canned or fresh groceries, holiday food baskets, formula, and much more.
