Humility of Mary Housing assistance programs.

The main programs from Humility of Mary Housing assist individuals who are struggling with their housing needs. The non-profit uses a combination of private and federal government funds to help with paying rent and other costs. While all resources are limited, clients can also access a number of other services, ranging from placement into transitional housing to case management.

Short term help is administered from the Emmanuel Community Care Center. Basic needs can be met, and this will include free food or clothing for work reasons or school. Some individuals facing eviction may qualify for emergency rent help, or if they are behind on utilities, then assistance may be provided for paying heating or energy bills. All income and other qualifications will need to be met.

As another part of the Homelessness Prevention services, case managers assess each individual’s situation, then provide appropriate assistance or referrals to solving it. Staff will work with the tenant’s landlord or homeowner’s mortgage company to mediate a solution or payment plan. Or they will help clients apply for government assistance, such as section 8 or some other type of public housing.

Long term Homeless or Eviction Prevention is combined with many of the programs indicated above. In addition to the one time rental assistance that may be provided, Humility of Mary Housing works to break the cycle of homelessness in Summit County. A recipient of financial aid will be provided ongoing case management and can enroll into weekly educational programs.

The currently homeless in Summit County or nearby regions can also receive support from the charity. Volunteers will help them with being placed into a transitional housing unit so they can work towards stability. At the end of that process, there may be either one time grants or some other form of financial aid to pay for moving costs or a security deposit on a new, low income apartment. They will also be provide vouchers to use to pay for food and home supplies for their new home.

Women from the Akron Ohio area, including single parents, have a housing unit dedicated to their needs as well. They will also be able to enroll into the case management programs, as indicated below. In fact, many of the resources administered by Humility of Mary are targeted at women and children from the greater Summit County area.

The Girard Ohio location will also distribute free holiday assistance, and this ranges from meals at Thanksgiving and Christmas to free toys and gifts for children. There may also be baskets of food passed out at Easter as well. The focus is on assisting children from the Summit County region.

Case Management is administered to all clients, including those that receive emergency financial support or a loan from the agency. As an example, individuals that use the transitional housing programs will need to partner with professional social workers to work towards employment and self-sufficiency.

The staff will provide the client with on-site assistance. The case manager and the individuals that use their housing facility will need to agree to a personalized plan for long term self-sufficiency. There are workshops in life skills, credit repair and parenting skills. This supportive group from Humility of Mary Housing helps individuals with finding employment or enrolling into educational services.

Programs are targeted at youth and teenagers too. A combination of teachers and volunteers work with students and children to get them on the right path to be successful in school, and the services will also provide them with free food, meals, or medical and dental care. During the summer months there will also be activities organized across Summit County to ensure the children have activities to continue to grow and develop.

Humility of Mary manages apartments for senior citizens in Akron Ohio. The sites will allow the elderly to continue to live independently. The housing units, which will require the senior to contribute towards their monthly rent, also have on-site managers that ensure all residents are safe and healthy.

What may be available at the housing sites various widely. Examples of assistance programs for seniors include free health or dental care screenings, meals on wheels, case management, housekeeping assistance and home care. There is also local transportation coordinated for shopping or a doctor appointment, and social gathering are organized.

Assistance is for immigrants and refugees in the Akron Ohio area as well. Humility of Mary Housing advocates for newcomers or victims of human trafficking, and they assist with any legal needs, employment, and helping to acclimate individuals to the region.

The goal of Humility of Mary Housing is to help the poor, homeless, and low income. The agency can offer their own emergency assistance and also connect families and individuals from Akron to a network of agencies.
