The Salvation Army provides financial help as well as free or low cost goods in Herkimer County. The Family Store is the most widely used resource at the Christian Faith based charity, but the charity also offers many other Family Services in the community. The Family/Thrift Store is used to pay for other programs. Find more details below.

Free or low cost stuff in Herkimer County

However the Family Store is what drives most of the local resources. It is a thrift type establishment, and sells a wide variety of supplies to the general public. There may be everything from couches to tables, beds, lamps, TVs, utensils, dishes, vintage goods, records, and even (on occasion) some antiques. All of the money from the sale of the items is used to (1) pay for the operation of the Herkimer County Salvation Army and (2) provide services to the poor, less fortunate, and clients.

The Family Store also provides opportunities for job programs too. Anyone that has been out of the workforce, such as homeless or may be recovering from substance abuse, can volunteer there for some experience. Or anyone can work at the store to get employment experience, give back, and gain other benefits.
Free items may also be given from the Herkimer Salvation Army Family Store. This is generally for a crisis only, such as in response to a disaster. Or the Salvation Army may help victims of domestic abuse, refugees, veterans returning from war, and similar examples. In these cases everything from free furniture for a new home to clothing and more may be given out.

Emergency financial help from Herkimer Salvation Army

A core service of the social workers at the charity is to help people overcome poverty. Or in general to get back on their feet so they can work towards long term success and stability. One of the main tools used to meet this goal is case management, and clients will meet with a Salvation Army case worker in Herkimer County. There is also a focus on assisting children, senior citizens, and the vulnerable.

All of the services will be customized to meet the needs of the client. As there may be some instances in which the organization will offer provide direct assistance, or in some cases they may refer the person to a partner. Examples may be the case worker using the support of a non-profit credit agency in Herkimer County for budgeting and/or credit repair. Or anyone abusing substances (drugs, alcohol, etc.) will be referred to a substance abuse center.

The programs focused on children include a summer camp, in which meals, food, and recreational activities can occur. They are also involved in a Meals on Wheels service, which delivers hot meals to the elderly or homebound.

Herkimer County Salvation Army seasonal services are offered too. They will give free back to school supplies or uniforms; Turkeys at Thanksgiving; Christmas food baskets or gifts as part of Adopt a Family; and many other resources too. All of this is intended to ensure the less fortunate have holiday and seasonal needs addressed.
