Salvation Army programs in Henderson County North Carolina.

The Salvation Army provides services in Henderson County to families living in poverty or those facing a crisis. The faith based charity operates out of a Hendersonville office and provides support regardless of age, race, or religion. Everything from basic needs (such as free food or holiday help) is provided along with financial aid for housing or utility bills.

When seeking assistance, funding is generally first come and served. The funding levels are limited and the programs provided will often change throughout the year. This means that during the fall or winter months there may be free school supplies or Christmas gifts for children. During the summer months students may be given a snack as they do not have free school lunches. Other aid may also be provided.

Henderson County Salvation Army emergency assistance – Many residents of the area seek everything from rent help to prescriptions or gasoline vouchers. The funding available from the charity is limited, however they will try to help if possible. The financial assistance is for a crisis situation and is not a long term benefit.

Housing expenses include electric bills or rental costs. When applying for this type of support, the applicant can only do this once every several months (or even a year) at most. The Salvation Army will also require proof of residency, income from a job or government aid, pensions, SSI disabilities, and other sources. Any payments are made to the landlord or utility company owed money to, and cash is never given to the applicant.

Salvation Army seasonal services – This is the resource used to provide holiday joy to seniors and children at Christmas. Students from families living in poverty may be given clothing, backpacks, and supplies so they can go to school with the items they need.

These programs rely on the donations from families, local businesses in Hendersonville, fund raisers help by the community, and other groups in Henderson County. Without those contributions, the Salvation Army programs such as Angel Tree would not be able to operate. Or without volunteers, maybe a homeless person or senior citizen in Henderson County would not be served a free Christmas meal.

Basic needs, clothing, and food – The Salvation Army offices in Hendersonville have a food pantry as well as thrift store on site. This is where qualified low income families can get some of their basic needs met. What may be offered includes, but is not limited, the following.

  • Boxes of food may be passed out from the pantry, which can contain both perishable or non-perishable items.
  • Items can be passed out around Thanksgiving or Christmas so families can prepare a holiday meal.
  • Thrift store sells gently used clothing, winter coats, furniture, shoes, Christmas toys, electronic and store.
  • Professional work attire may be given for job seekers in the community.

The Henderson County Salvation Army will provide some items from the thrift store at a low cost. However for those families recovering from a disaster, they may be given a voucher to pay for the goods vs. shopping there. This type of aid would be very limited and the applicant needs to be faced with an exceptional hardship.

Additional Family Services may also be provided in some situations. The Salvation Army will try to provide support to meet certain requests, if the resident is qualified. If a struggling family needs a medication, maybe a voucher is given. Or if an unemployed client needs to print a job resume, maybe the free use of a computer can be arranged. So the services available in Henderson County are flexible.

The Salvation Army in Hendersonville North Carolina is also there to help during a disaster. Staff, working with partners such as the American Red Cross and other first responders, support both families as well as those responding. They offer water, meals, food, placement into shelters, and maybe even vouchers to shop at a thrift store.
