Financial help from Biloxi area Salvation Army

When a family is struggling, they often request emergency financial help. While the Biloxi Salvation Army may have a few dollars available to assist, most of this will be addressed in the form of referrals. The social workers at the center can be a wealth of information for families living in poverty.

The benefits are available in the state of Mississippi as well as nationwide. The main programs include some or all of the following. The Salvation Army of Harrison County Mississippi can refer people to SNAP food stamps application sites, grants as part of welfare, USDA commodities, as well as low income housing. There are dozens of other entitlement programs available to very low income families, seniors, and the disabled.

As noted, sometimes the Harrison County Salvation Army has a few dollars available to help in a crisis. The uses of this money may be for paying rental expenses, prescription medications, or utility or water bill assistance. The money, when available, is a “hand up” and not a “hand out”, so the applicant needs to make the case they can gain stability with their own bills or rent on their own.

Housing, or the lack of affordable homes/apartments, can be a barrier to breaking a cycle of poverty or homelessness. When a large percentage of a household income goes for their rent or mortgage, this be a challenge. The Biloxi Salvation Army will tries to not only give shelter to the homeless, but also provide suggestions on how to address other housing needs.

This means many things. They center will have information on transitional housing for veterans in Harrison County or women escaping domestic violence or learn about Section 8 housing choice vouchers. If the tenant is being discriminated against by a landlord, then referrals are available from case managers to both legal aid and government agencies. Even learn about section 8 housing requirements in Mississippi.

Counseling along with mentorship is arranged. The Salvation Army will provide a non-judgmental service to the needy. Donations and free items

Harrison County Salvation Army thrift store is open to the general public. There are two main uses of this. One of course is to sell residents gently used goods. There may be everything from clothes to furniture to toys and vintage goods. Other goods for sale may be appliances, kitchen utensils, bedding, cribs, and much more.

The thrift store can be effective for families to shop at when they are moving into a new home or apartment in Biloxi or Harrison County. When a family is living on a limited income (or maybe senior citizen or disabled person on a fixed income) they are often seeking deals. Every dollar saved at a thrift store can be used for paying the more “important” bills include as the rent or deposit due to the landlord. The location is a great tool available to meet that goal.

The main Harrison County Salvation Army donation programs ramp up during the back to school, Thanksgiving, and Christmas season. There will often be free items given to low income families, the unemployed, and people with an exceptional hardship. The main programs include Angel Tree as well as free holiday meals, including Turkeys at Thanksgiving along with an annual back to school supply giveaway event.
