Salvation Army social services and assistance programs Hampshire County.

In a time of crisis, the Hampshire County Salvation Army may be able to help. The non-profit, charity organization uses money raised from its thrift store and donations to provide assistance to the needy. Everything from one time heating bill or rent help, along with a box of food or vouchers for a medication, may be provided as part of their social services.

The charity is committed to serving the poor and low income during their time of crisis. It operates as a mostly volunteer based organization that combines some of their own programs along with referrals and partnerships with groups such as the United Way. More information on the social services that may be available are below.

Using donations as well as grants from the government and partners, limited financial assistance may be provided. Anyone applying needs proof of their hardship, such as an eviction notice, note from a doctor on the prescription needed, or copy of a utility disconnection notice. The Salvation Army in Hampshire County will also require proof of income and much more.

Since funds are limited, priorities need to be made and there are no promises to receiving help. A focus will tend to be on families that have a source of income but are out of all other options, including support from other charities or government agencies. Examples may be funds to pay the utility bill or a family with a sick child, or maybe a senior citizen in Hampshire County is provided a space heater for heat or a free fan to cool their home. Or they have applications to the MA Good Neighbor Energy Fund. Hard decisions need to be made.

Housing needs are another focus of the Salvation Army. Hampshire County emergency shelters are used as well as transitional housing units. Not only may the family (or a single adults) be given a place to stay, but they also access a wide range of other supportive services. This may be everything from a hot meal or dinner to clothing, access to a laundry facility, and the free use of a computer to seek a job.

Services are also available for the homeless. Whether the event was caused by crisis, or some other reason such as a veteran being homeless as they can't find a job, Hampshire County Salvation Army housing programs can fill that gap. Some resources are focused on people from a wide range of backgrounds. Salvation Army services can support the disabled (either physical or mental), substance abusers, veterans returning from war, or senior citizens that are struggling to regain independence.

Hampshire County Salvation Army basic needs

There are several that focus on giving working poor clients a little relief. These can be effective at allowing the client to free up their income to pay for more critical living expenses, such as a medication or maybe a car repair. The services available in the Northampton area include, but are not limited, to the following.

-Low cost thrift stores are used to sell products to the public. Furniture, cribs, beds, kitchen utensils, and more are available.
-Hampshire County Salvation Army food banks distribute free groceries, holiday food boxes, formula, and other items.
-Clothing closet is part of the thrift store. People with vouchers can be given free clothes for work, diapers, and critical items.
-Christmas assistance ranging from Angel Tree to hot meals for children.
-Information on local utility company payment plans or services, including those that are funded from customer donations.

Many other needs may be met from time to time and based on the applicant's situation. On occasion, there may be volunteers delivering a meal to a senior citizen, help in acquiring prescription medications from clinics or voucher services, meals from soup kitchens, and more. The list of what may be provided is extensive, but every changing.

All of the basic needs or financial assistance programs available vary throughout the year. While the Salvation Army in Northampton Massachusetts will try to support residents that have a crisis, many times they can't and referrals can be given instead. However, the thrift store will always be open to the general public, and this is one resource available that will help clients of the charity save money.
