Salvation Army assistance programs in Grundy and Kendall region.

Several social services are provided by the Salvation Army in Grundy County Illinois. Assistance programs are also available for nearby regions such as Kendall and Livingston. The main focus is on meeting basic needs of people facing a crisis. This can include free food, shelter, referrals, and clothing. Other resources can include feeding programs for seniors, lodging, spiritual counseling, and seasonal assistance.

The demand and number of requests increase during the holidays. Providing the low income, in particular their children, with free food baskets, clothes, toys, and even holiday parties is provided by the Salvation Army. The center relies heavily on donations during this time of they year. While these contributions provide for much of this holiday and Christmas assistance, some of the surplus funds can be used to provide other aid throughout the year.

Other Christmas assistance provided, often at no cost, is as follows. Inquire into the Children's Tree program, Holiday parties for youth and older adults, the Illinois Coats for Kids program, Christmas food baskets, and Community Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners that are served in Grundy.

Volunteers are always needed. If you can, please participate in activities such as Bell Ringing at the red kettles, Serving of free holiday meals, Wrapping gifts, Basket Distribution to the homebound, and Participating in the Dress-a-Bear or Doll programs.

Many of the resources in the region are offered as part of the Family Service Center. It offers material assistance for those in need, as well as spiritual counseling. This is provided regardless of religion or background.

Some of what is offered in Grundy and Livingston includes an emergency shelter. Resources may be offered in partnership with Salvation Army locations in Peoria as well. The non-profit can offer temporary housing for women, senior citizens, children, and intact families.

Not only will you have a place to stay, but case workers and the housing specialists will partner with families on breaking the cycle of dependency by helping them find affordable permanent housing. This can include budgeting, nutrition, financial literacy, job programs, and other self-help resources. When it comes to moving, the agency can direct clients to potential programs to help with paying deposits or first months rent. Shelters also serve a free hot meal or food.

Emergency and disasters can be addressed. Unfortunately, these situations can occur at any time in any Illinois community. Both preparedness and responding to these situations, no matter if they are in Grundy or somewhere else, is part of the work of the Salvation Army. Teams of volunteers and professionals are ready to respond in time of need. Receive counseling and access to disaster center operations for long-term emergency situations. Volunteers will set up a canteen service (for food and water) to assist public safety personnel and victims at disaster sites. Ongoing support is also offered from the Salvation Army across Illinois as needed.

Some centers will offer child care. If they don’t, then a case manager will probably have referrals for you. Make sure it is licensed by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.

Where available, the low cost, yet fully comprehensive care offered by the staff and teachers includes developmentally appropriate activities addressing the emotional, social, intellectual, nutritional, physical and spiritual needs of children. Most of the assistance is available in Kendall and Grundy County based on a sliding fee scale. So the lower your income, the less you will need to pay.

Examples of just some of the other emergency services provided by the Salvation Army include information and referral services, emergency food pantry, rental assistance, seasonal assistance (holiday and back to school), job training opportunities, and much more. Social workers on available to help in anyway they can.
