Genesis Home housing and assistance programs.

Genesis Home administers several housing programs and offers support for the homeless in Durham County. They range from Turning Point, which is for the disabled, and several resources for families with children or seniors. Each of their programs is focused on a certain target group, but the bottom line is that the organization and its partners are committed to helping the less fortunate in the community.

Families with children, including single parents, can receive support and short term housing from Family Matters. The guest will be provided a place to stay, but more importantly they will be provided with ongoing case management and stability.

The goal is to help the family achieve independence. This is done by helping them increase their educational levels and/or enroll into job training. Other components include classes on developing financial literacy, improving family health and wellness, and help with transitioning into permanent, safe and affordable housing in Durham County.

Genesis Home will also support single moms. They can benefit from these services, and also receive referrals to child care or other challenges they may be faced with. Another focus is for offering them basic needs, ranging from food to clothing.

Rent and housing assistance for the disabled is also provided by Genesis Home. This is a very small scale program known as Turning Point, and is only for a few different families. It also combines emergency financial aid along with extensive case management.

There is only support for adults with a diagnosed disability, and the applicant is required to enroll into any needed counseling or medical care. It also touches upon substance abuse, mental health, and other development disabilities that may be required to gain stability.

Turning Point case management is extensive. It will help individuals maximize their income as well through vocational training or other support. Clients will need to set and work towards goals, and as part of that, a case manager will be assigned to them. The disabled individual will need to work towards all these goals in order to receive any form of housing assistance from Genesis Home.

Referrals are available in partnership with the Durham County Department of Social Services. There is a Housing Intake Coordinator available that can direct clients to a combination of government grants or other local non-profits in Durham County.

The phone number for information is 919-560-8014. As part of this application or referral process, a coordinator will take down the applicant’s information on their income, expenses, and other information. Then, a referral will be offered to the best program possible.

In addition to all of that, Housing Intake Coordinator from Genesis Home will stay in contact with local non-profit agencies or government authorities to determine if openings are available for any form or rental support or other benefits.

Circles of Support is for the currently homeless. Many churches and faith based group’s partner with Genesis Home on this, and together they offer shelter, low income transitional housing or apartments, clothing, and more. It will both empower formerly homeless individuals or families while providing the support and guidance to them that is necessary to sustain their housing over the long term.

No matter what program an individual uses, whether Circles of Support, Turning Point, or another, case management is always required. A professional worker from the agency will meet with the client, and together a plan based on goals and other objectives is created. It also must be adhered too. The objective is to identify what caused the hardship or homelessness, and of course put together a plan to deal with it.

As part of this process, Genesis Home will help people apply for public assistance. They will also assist with educational and employment needs, and this includes working with employers in Durham on placing clients into a job. There is also credit repair offered, as having a decent score is required for moving into most low income housing units.

Other support is also provided as part of case management. This includes more life skills issues, such as anger management, dealing with domestic violence, and programs for single parents. As noted, many of these challenges may have lead to the person becoming homeless, so therefore Genesis Home will work with the participant to address them.

The main address is 300 N. Queen Street, Durham, North Carolina 27701. For more information, such as referrals or to inquire into these housing programs, dial 919-683-5878.
