The organization was created almost 40 years ago, and it is partly funded by the Legal Services Corporation (LSC). Maryland Legal Aid provides funding that allows free legal advice to be provided to low and moderate income individuals and families across Maryland. It is one of the largest such providers across the country.
LSC is an extensive government program that many people have never heard of, and it provides federal funds to almost 140 independent nonprofit organizations across the nation. Maryland Legal Aid benefits from the federal government funding, and it has grown into one of the largest such free legal advice programs in the U.S. The funding provided by LSC is vital to allowing Legal Aid to continue to operate, as it makes up nearly 20 percent of the total annual budget.
Last year Maryland Legal Aid provided assistance and counseling to over 50,000 clients across the state. The services provided made a meaningful difference in many of these people lives.
