Chicago low income housing programs and homeless shelters.

Individuals who are faced with a crisis and the homeless can turn to an extensive network of community based homeless shelters, rent subsidized apartments and transitional housing units. The City of Chicago, Department of Family and Support Services pays for and coordinates many of these centers across the region, including Cook County. There are also charities, churches and other social service agencies that offer support. The types of emergency homeless shelters as well as some of the leading organizations to call for information are below.

Types of short term housing and shelter programs in Cook County

Interim and Transitional Homeless Shelters are scatted around the city and they are available 24 hours per day to those who need them. Qualified clients can stay up to 120 days at one of these centers. During your stay you will need to fully participate in other case management and support services. These programs and services will be customized for single adults, pregnant mothers or entire families and social workers will try to provide them the assistance they need during their stay. The goal is to move people into permanent supportive housing in Cook County.

If you need a place to stay for one night, then try a Chicago Emergency Response Shelter. This will offer a place for someone to stay and also offer an initial assessment of the clients mid to long term needs. People can also get information and referrals to other state of Illinois and federal government resources. While most of the emergency homeless shelters for single adults close during the day, others which are more family oriented may be open 24 hours per day. Many people use these locations to escalate the cold Chicago winter.

Certain times of the year, in particular during the winter and a hot summer stretch, the demand on the shelters greatly increases. So the City of Chicago may add additional locations or emergency shelter beds during certain periods. Not only that but some people may even qualify for transportation to their shelter placement.

Permanent Supportive Housing will both help individuals find a new home or apartment as well as help them acquire the skills they need to keep stable. There are qualifications in place that need to be met from applicants. This type of support can also be combined with section 8 housing choice vouchers in the city of Chicago and state of Illinois.

Over the years thousands of local families have been able to find permanent housing in the greater Cook County Illinois region. Many of them get income subsidized homes from section 8. As part of this process clients can learn about rental assistance programs, including vouchers. Learn more about what section 8 housing is.
