CARE Ministry Houston  assistance programs.

Several churches in the greater Harris County area and western Houston have partnered together as part of the CARE Ministry. It is also called West Houston Assistance Ministry, or WAM. Together they offer numerous community services to the less fortunate and those that are struggling. Note they only cover a limited number of zip codes.

The network of churches as well as charities will try to provide everything from emergency financial support to other self-sufficiency and well-being programs. Note that every service offered depends on funding levels as well as any partnerships that are in place with other Houston agencies.

Assistance from the CARE Ministry

Most of the support is part of the charity’s CARE Ministry. This will offer low and maybe even moderate income residents assistance to meet their basic needs and emergency aid. While more details are below, this can include free food, prescription discount vouchers, clothing, Eye glass vouchers and home repairs. Other more educational services may be Computer classes, Immigration Assistance, and ESL classes. Or get information on government and state of Texas benefits, such as Medicaid, Food stamps, or CHIP. They also have a thrift store as well as seasonal help.

The team at CARE Ministry work alongside clients to offer encouragement, possible training and long term opportunity to them. The goal is to build self-sufficiency within households and really sustainable communities in the Harris County area.

Many of the churches, or their partners, have on site food pantries. CARE Ministry will make sure that every bag of food passed out to the needy has a balance of fruit, protein, vegetables and starches for families and individuals. They focus on the Harris County zip codes of 77042, 77057, 77063, 77072, 77077, 77082, as well as 77083. There are even canned goods known as ready-to-eat food meals offer as part of the LINC services. The pantries are located across the Houston Metropolitan area at several of the church sites.

Community Services will often usually have a monthly food and grocery distribution program. When this occurs, which will usually be once day per month, there will be canned goods, non-perishable food, fruits, vegetables, and sometimes meat and dairy items too.

In addition to the free food, the West Houston Assistance Ministry CARE program provides clothes and household supplies. That may be everything from personal hygiene to soap, detergent, feminine products, diapers and more. This is free and often combined with food baskets.

Emergency assistance may sometimes be offered, depending on funding levels and the applicant’s income and other factors. Whenever possible, CARE Ministry in Houston provides assistance to families in need of help as resources are available. Some of the different types of assistance includes clothing, food, funds for rent or security deposits, utilities, and referrals to other programs. The financial aid is limited though, and sometimes a loan will be issued to the applicant. Find a list of Houston rent assistance programs for the low income as well as immigrants.

Ensuring low income housing is a key function of CARE Ministry. Staff will educate consumers, empower the less fortunate, and help them find a quality home. Some in additional to some of the financial support noted above, there are eviction and homeless prevention resources.

The housing programs assist families with the home buying process. Receive support in improving your personal financial resources up to and including closing on the purchase of the home. Clients have the opportunity to work closely with trained specialists and counselors to work towards homeownership.

As noted, the WAM Care Ministry also tries to provide help during the back to school as well as Christmas/Thanksgiving season. This is the seasonal support. Everything from toys to backpacks, notebooks, clothes, and more may be passed out th children from struggling households or their parents too.

Case managers from the CARE Ministry network of churches and agencies offer help with child support, legal assistance and referrals to government benefits.

They also work with many other Harris County and Texas agencies. CARE Ministry services partners with Lone Star Legal Aid, the Houston Food Bank, Community Health Choice, Change Happens Summit Dental, CAP and other non-profits.

A focus is on healthcare in Harris County. Many families are uninsured or struggling to pay medical bills. Migrants, immigrants, and Spanish speakers also tend to struggle with getting dental as well as free medical care.
