Burlington and Chittenden County Salvation Army assistance programs.

The Chittenden County Salvation Army has multiple locations in the region, including three thrift stores and a social service office in Burlington. The charity organization works to help the less fortunate by offering financial help, food, and basic needs. Not only that, but the case management services available can be considered to be a hand up.

There are a total of three thrift stores in the county. What is sold includes, but is not limited too, electronics, Clothes, Small Furniture, Household Goods, Bedding, books, movies, toys for Christmas and birthdays, appliances, bedding, and other items. The Salvation Army also have a diverse range of stuff to sell from the Chittenden County locations of:

336 North Winooski Ave., Burlington, Phone: (802) 864-9552.
223 Lake Street, St. Albans VT, call (802) 524-9695 for hours.
The last site is at 197 Pearl Street, Essex Junction. Phone (802) 872-8730.

For people that need emergency financial assistance or information on social services, appointments are needed. The office is open a few days per week. While the Burlington Salvation Army tries to provide funds when they can, often they refer people to local non-profits or even government benefits. Some of them help with energy bills or there may be resources such as free heating oil from charity networks. Other options are explored as well.

The other social services may be offered as the following. A walk in food pantry has cereal, surplus government items such as cheese, formula, and other groceries. This is the main hunger prevention program. But the Chittenden County Salvation Army may also provide money to stop homelessness or utility disconnections, and there may be grants for rent, utility or heating bills, and other housing costs.

When seeking funds from the church based group, bring proof of income, residency, age, and identification. The Salvation Army will generally focus on people that are at risk, and that have no resources available to them. The Chittenden County may therefore focus it financial aid on helping seniors with housing, single parents in the region, the disabled, and maybe even immigrants.

A feeding kitchen is open from 5pm to 6pm. This is used by the Salvation Army to feed the homeless and working poor in Chittenden County. It is available in partnership with churches, charities, and other donors in the community. Some homebound, or senior citizens, can request a meal delivery service too. Whether it is healthy dinner or someone that just needs to get out of the cold during the winter, the feeding kitchen is an option.

Volunteers also offer community services. There are people that do work, help seniors or the disabled by delivering meals, and others that donate to the thrift store. Many people in Burlington Vermont partner with the Salvation Army to help in anyway they can.

This is what really drives their case management work. As a volunteer may work at the center to show a job seeker how to use a computer, which can help with employment needs. There are also volunteers (as well as full tie staff) that can help clients budget properly or that offer credit counseling services.

The community services will also cover holiday programs. The Salvation Army Chittenden County has its volunteers do everything such as serve free Thanksgiving or Christmas meals to provide school supplies to kids for kids. There are also other in demand Christmas programs, such as as Angel Tree as well as Adopt a Family which provide gifts, toys, and food boxes. Parents with a low income can apply for these seasonal services.

The thrift stores are noted above. These are open to anyone from the community for shopping. However when it comes to financial aid, which is their social services program, this address is 64 Main Street, Burlington, Vermont 05401. For an appointment at the Chittenden County Salvation Army, an appointment is needed and dial (802) 864-6991.
