How to Save Money

Buckhannon Salvation Army financial aid and social services.

The Buckhannon Salvation Army not only runs a low cost thrift store, but the charity is involved in so much more. There may be some limited funding for assisting with bills in a crisis, ranging from energy to rent, clothing, or heating oil. More “soft” social services are also available, and these can help through Substance Abuse Rehabilitation or Education and Job Training. Other categories of assistance from the Salvation Army in Upshur County.

Clothing, Food, and Hygiene Items – This ranges from free groceries to school uniforms, supplies, or soap and detergent. Vouchers may also be given for use at the thrift store.

Shelter and Rent Assistance – Grants are used for homeless prevention services, and the money assists with rent, security deposits, or moving expenses.

Utility Bill Assistance – The Buckhannon Salvation Army can assist paying bills, gas, water, and other everyday electric expenses. Or information on LIHEAP and weatherization may be available.

Holiday Assistance – Donations allow Upshur County parents to get free Christmas toys for their kids, holiday meals, and even “holiday” help in the form of school supplies. Inquire into Angel Tree or Adopt a Family programs.

Youth and Senior Citizen Services – The charity assists the younger and older generations in Buckhannon. Food, meals, games, and field trips are arranged.

Educational Workshops and Job Training – This is critical to ending poverty. Salvation Army case workers guide and mentor clients on these topics.

Free food – The food banks is used. Volunteers pass out groceries that have been donated to the pantry, and they feed the poor and those in poverty.

Medication Payment Assistance – Vouchers may be available for prescription medications. They may even help with passing out free insulin or diabetes supplies, eyeglasses, and more.

Referrals – The Salvation Army case managers can direct a family to other local charities if they can't meet the need themselves.

The Buckhannon Salvation Army assists with Substance Abuse Rehabilitation. With a growing trend of drug abuse in Upshur County and West Virginia, the church groups wants to help individuals escape the cycle of abuse and addiction. There are both in and out patient services available, some in local towns or counties. Short term housing may also be arranged.

Everything from medical care to counseling, food, and other support is available at a low cost. The agency will offer free spiritual, social, and emotional assistance to clients. This can be met through one on one or group therapy. Or Medicaid can also help pay for this rehabilitation.

Housing and homeless prevention is also a core Buckhannon Salvation Army program. There are multiple tools used. They range from prevention (rent or utility bill help) to accommodations. Those housing solutions may be emergency shelters, group homes for the truly vulnerable, as well as transitional housing. Or if someone in Buckhannon is now homeless, the Salvation Army will work to arrange shelter, even at a local church.

But the Salvation Army can only do so much. The family/clients needs to take personal responsibility. So this is where the Salvation Army can help there as well. To this end there is everything from counseling to educational support. If the client needs medical care while in the shelter, this can also be arranged by partnerships with clinics in Upshur County. So all needs are covered by participants in the housing programs.

The address of the thrift store as well as the social service programs are at 21 N Spring St, Buckhannon, WV 26201. It is open until 4pm weekdays. Call (304) 472-6165 for intake.
