Supportive services from Blair County Society of St. Vincent de Paul can help struggling families. There are programs focused on families with children, the unemployed, and domestic violence survivors, among many others. The goal of the services it to help the Blair County family regain an independent lifestyle.

Housing and homeless shelter services from SVDP in Blair County

A free homeless shelter in Altoona offers short term accommodations to guests. This is also combined with supportive services to struggling families who are left homeless. Some of the people seeking lodging are impacted by emotional, financial or domestic violence in their lives.

The services at SVDP provide individuals them with the critical and necessary emotional, financial and educational resources. What may be offered includes, but is not limited to, Transportation, Self-Sufficiency Planning, Job Search Assistance, Budgeting and also free Credit Counseling classes.

Residents of Blair County often need advice in locating housing. For qualified residents of the region, there is housing counseling available to clients who are dealing with a crisis. The support given will help them in terms of maintaining or finding permanent and secure homes to live in. This counseling from Society of Saint Vincent de Paul partners covers a broad spectrum of issues to help people find an appropriate home or apartment to live in. Supportive services offered include mediation for both tenants and homeowners. There is also information and counseling for first time home buyers. Or those that rent a home can learn about their rights and responsibilities

There is a St. Vincent Blair County supported transitional housing program for families. This is available as the result of funding from the Housing & Urban Development’s Continuum of Care process and the state of Pennsylvania Development Services Agency.

This temporary housing program is operated by partners of SVDP. It offers unfortunate, disadvantaged clients access to a place to stay. They will need to pay money for it, but it is combined with rent subsidies from a time period of 6 months to 2 years.

 

 

 

Any rent due on a monthly basis is typically based on availability of funding and assessment of the needs of each participating family. Services available for those in the transitional home include finding housing, transportation, as well as action planning for self-sufficiency.

For at-risk homeowners or renters residing in Blair County who have not had access to home Weatherization before, there are services free of charge which include the following. Staff from local agencies, which are referred to by Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, will help with furnace safety inspection, Attic insulation, Water heater insulation, Elderly Home Repair, and Air leakage reduction.

During a limited period of time, there is a financial crisis intervention available through the Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Blair. The non-profit offers support to low income, working poor individuals and families. Examples of some of the services available include the following.

-Grants can be used for temporary, short-term financial assistance such as first month’s rent, hotel/motel costs, security deposits, rent/mortgage payments.

  • Food from a local pantry in Altoona.
  • Loans may be issued as well to some clients.
  • Bus tickets (for employment only) to or from work.
  • Other SVDP issued grants can be used for payment for utility bills, mortgage payments and homeless services.

Through a partnership with local workforce centers in Blair County, SVDP provides educational resources for  low-income or unemployed clients who desire new skills. The goal of this educational program is to offer education to people seeking a career in certain fields.

The free Food Pantry from Society of St. Vincent de Paul is available to struggling, poverty stricken families on a monthly basis. When possible the location provides supplemental food to them. In addition, Society of Saint Vincent de Paul runs an Operation Turkey program during the months of October and November each year. This programs offers thousands of people a free Thanksgiving dinner, and it is for those who reside in the County. There are also free Christmas meals served as well, with the possibility of small gifts for children.

Meal Home Delivery is available for seniors and the disabled who meet the following guidelines noted below. Applicants need to be 60 years old or older or a spouse of that person, unable to feed yourself, homebound, and they also can't be eligible to participate in the Congregate Meal Program. They also can't be able to obtain or prepare adequate menus on their own.

Prospective clients need to call to speak to the coordinator of Blair County St. Vincent de Paul. This is required in order to enroll in the program and provide the necessary information required. If enrolled, clients will have meals delivered by a van driver and there is a suggested donation to either the driver or to mail it directly to the office.
