Re: Help with Back Rent
Hi all,
Obviously there are many programs listed here, but most seem to be for emergency needs as the rent is "back", past due. We have that addressed here, with states listed for rent help in a crisis.

Re: Help with Back Rent
My son (22) and his pregnant fiancé' (19) have just gotten off the greyhound bus. They are coming from a homeless shelter in NC. They have been approved for section 8 housing, and he has a job interview this afternoon. But in order for them to move in they have to pay off the $900 in back rent that he owes from his apartment rental agreement he had back 3 years ago. He is trying to help himself and his to be family but he has run into a bit of bad luck. Is there anything that you can do to help? Please??? They are sleeping on a floor for now. They have only the clothes on their backs. Please help if you can...thanks,.

Re: Help with Back Rent
My mom went into the hospital for heart failure and we got behind in the rent. I've been paying my landlord 1,000 a month for the back rent, in the time I was with my mom in the hospital almost 31days we had a water leek it started slow buy the time I was able to notify the landlord my water bill was 1,390.00 and it was on the hot water so I was paying five to six hundred in electric. So that's how we got behind this month was the last 600.00 water bill we had to pay I'm on SSI my mom is as I'm curettage 1,400 hundred behind. Due to the high bill I am unable to pay the whole rent o have 600.00 told a thousand for this month. The landlord is holding a writ over my head for the back rent but fits really nothing I can't save to move because he has this writ and were paying 200.00 extra a month to get sought up. I need help very badly we also have 3 children in the home 9 years down to 2 months please If you can help me I would be so appreciated Thank You, Kathleen

Re: Help with Back Rent
I went to court on 4/25 in Fall River, MA I worked out a payment plan where I would make monthly payments for 1 of the 2 months of back rent and the $348 in court fees. I am a Veteran on Chapter 115, a state program which helps veterans.
I requested one month back rent of 1035 on 5/3, requested denied. I filed an appeal on 5/21. Had a hearing on 6/24, will not receive notice until end of this month. I am scheduled to appear in court on the 15th.
If I can obtain the one month back rent of 1035 and $156.25 in new court fees before the 15th I will avoid any further fees and being evicted for failing to abide by the court decision of 4/25. I provided letters from both my VA doctors regarding my mental health issues and a letter from my apartment.

Re: Help with Back Rent
Hold up. The landlord did not fix the plumbing problems, so you moved and paid for it? That is so wrong. The landlord needs to fix plumbing...report them to the county building inspector. Then, if they couldn't make the repairs and you had to move, there is no way you should pay for it. So you should still have the cash for rent.
Why would you do this? This story sounds so fishy. Everyone knows a property owner needs to take care of the "core" operations of the house, such as plumbing, heat, etc. Anyway, also look into legal aid at the same time as the rent assistance programs in Monroe County.

When I returned home I did turn all of that information in and they told me it was nothing they could do. Now I'm back and the same boat and it's like they don't care. My doctor took me out of work March 27 2016. Now I'm about to lose everything I have worked hard for.

Re: Help with Back Rent
Why did the landlord not fix the plumbing? If they did that, you would not need to have moved and would not owe any rent. Also, why are the fees almost 50% of your total cost. This entire situation sounds unusual and not sure if you are telling us the full story. But we will still provide you suggestions. We have many resources listed, and maybe some will help in your situation. So try this and read programs for paying rent.

Re: Help with Back Rent
My daughter and I live in a subsided housing. My daughter who was attending school which I thought she was full-time all along, now the landlord stated that since she was not full-time I owe back rent which will be at least $1,000.00 per month. May I reduce the rent that I’m paying now to $384.00?
My other question is there a way it can be paid back less than $1,000.00? I’m willing get a part-time job and pay $700.00 per month until the back rent is pay in full. The landlord stated to me my best bet is to move. Thank you for your help in this matter.

Re: Help with Back Rent
I am a single mother of three and we recently moved to the area. I am employed and I am currently living with family members, but I am looking to get an apartment or small house. I am unable to save enough for a deposit, first and last months rent, so I am reaching out and seeking some assistance for me and my children. We are transitioning to a new state and we need some assistance.

Re: Help with Back Rent
Hi, I need help on a late rent payment in Oakland California. I currently don't live in the apartments that I owe the late rent payment to due to me moving into my new apartment but the payment still has to be made. When I was living at my old apartment, rent was due at the first of every month but I wasn't able to make my rent payment of 650.00 for October because I was having financial problems and couldn't afford it. I talked to the landlord and got a extension and was giving until the end of October to pay the 650.00 plus the 50.00 late fee so a total of 700.00. That apartment lease is up on October 31st and I no longer live in that apartment anymore because I found a new one that I'm living in now. The security deposit was 372.16. 300.00 for the actual security deposit than 72.16 was the prorated amount because I moved in 5 days before the month was over with and Novembers rent is free because my rental application got approved and because I signed a 12 month lease and that was the special that was going on at the time. I can not afford the 700.00 rent payment that I still owe to my last apartment for the month of October because of the 372.16 that went towards my new apartment and because I have other expenses that I have to pay for which is my car payment, car insurance, cell phone bill, my every day living needs and especially my son because I am a single mother. I need help and any help that's provided would be very much appreciated. Thank you so much for your time and I hope to hear back from someone soon.

Re: Help with Back Rent
Hi. I am 117 years old, I been having a hard time with our family, we lost our home in Laredo Texas, back in November. 2010. We moved to Dallas with one of my sisters, but we had to move soon from their because she had housing section 8. So so we found a little apartment that look like a storage. He rented us the apartment for 150 a month, but if we fix the apartment. He won’t change a thing, so we family of 6 are fixing it little by little. We stayed almost a year, but he started charging more because we had already fix it to a room. We couldn’t afford paying the rent as it went up to $450. I was a minor, mom and sisters illegal and the others with kids, under 18. everybody separated to different homes...so from that time on we are moving around, from place to place from city to city. Now we got together again and I need to ask for a loan from a family member and finally got an apartment. But the one we got is $680 rent please water and $25 light. We got this one because it was the only one that accepted us the our big family, but they said he can’t be heard or seen, so my nephews don’t go outside and play. They do not go inside because we are in the second for her. My sister, she has 6 kids including 2 boys and 4 girls, all under 8 of age. She is also undocumented with no ID. She was raised here, but didn’t graduate, so she also is hard for her. I have one child and pregnant, my mom and sister is 16 years old and neither have jobs. Like I said my mom and sister are undocumented and my sister is under age and me at a high risk pregnancy. I am asking for rental help, or any think available, we are so desperate and tired of trying and trying and never getting back on our feet. Please if there is a way of help, please Help us. I have applied for housing and section 8 but still waiting. It has been almost two years already, and nothing I am looking for. I need a 3 bedroom housing for myself, my son, and my daughter. My husband and I have been separated for over a year. I have struggled finding full time employment, feeling just a hair short of better skills needed to earn about $35K yearly to sustain my family's needs. I am pursuing educational opportunities in hopes that insurance certificate of proficiency will help boost my resume and employability within a long-term career. I am working part-time and have sales opportunities available Thursdays and Fridays, but unable to take advantage since I have no one to watch my daughter. I am waiting subsidized daycare so I can maximize my earning potential giving my current ability and options. I feel like I'm spinning my wheels and trapped I need help and appreciate any advice you may have.

Re: Help with Back Rent
If you are behind on your rent, and facing eviction, we are jumping to the conclusion that you may qualify for free legal aid in Michigan as income must be low enough. So try that for dealing with the eviction. Many attorneys will in fact help tenants fight evictions, and they may be able to refer people to emergency rental programs too. Try selling your car as well to a dealer...may be quicker. Anyway, here is the information on free legal aid Michigan and who to call.

Re: Help with Back Rent
Is that Warren County Ohio, and we believe this Warren is in many states. If not we need the state. If so, here are Warren County assistance programs and resources for rent and other housing needs. Call places like the Salvation Army of South Lebanon at 513-494-1911 for information on the back rent you owe, which can sometimes be called arreage.
