Help from World Overcomers Ministries.

The demand for help in Berkeley County is extensive, and World Overcomers Ministries tries to assist with basic needs such as food, shelter, and medical needs. Some of what they provide is issued directly by them, such as bags of groceries and referrals, and other services are available as the result of partnerships with other organizations, and that may be medical care from clinics.

The main programs, as well as classifications, are noted below. When it comes to offering assistance, the resources are limited and applicants should come prepared with proof of their hardship and other information. In many cases, clients will be directed to a host of other local agencies for their needs, but World Overcomers Ministries will also try to do their best to assist.

Holiday assistance ranges from free Thanksgiving and Christmas Baskets to small gifts for children for low income families. The agency, most of whom are volunteers, coordinate the distribution of food and meals at Thanksgiving and food along with gifts for Christmas.

Berkeley County businesses and individuals are key to this service. The majority the holiday assistance programs are sponsored by the generosity of civic groups and individuals. Note that the demand and number of requests to World Overcomers Ministries increase during the holidays. So apply early, as providing the low income, in particular their children, with free food baskets, toys, games, and more is limited.

World Overcomers Ministries will also refer residents to other options. There are local holiday parties at many churches for youth, Coats for Kids, and dinners held at soup kitchens. The homebound, such as senior citizens, may also have a meal delivered directly to their home. Volunteers are always needed. If someone is interested in donating to this program, or requesting Christmas assistance, they should call the center for more information.

The Food Pantry provides emergency supplies to families facing a short term crisis. The typical clients include needy families and individuals, and they may be given canned meats, rice, breads, tuna, peanut butter, canned fruits, formula, and cereal. There is also a Meals on Wheels service that provides and delivers monthly groceries to seniors and their souses who are shut-ins. Or people living on fixed incomes, such as a pension or disability, can also benefit from the service.

The goal is to ensure everyone has access to enough nutritious food to feed themselves and their families. So whether that is from the World Overcomers Ministries pantry above, or applications to SNAP food stamps, in either way many resources are offered.

In some cases, financial assistance is available to clients. People may need help with paying bills such as electric costs, rent or propane bills. The process is extensive, and World Overcomers Ministries will try to help.

First, an initial interview will take place. This is done with the applicant to determine their needs. Based on the results, the Ministry has guidelines that determine if financial assistance or maybe a short term loan will be given.

Any aid is available as a form of short-term crisis assistance after an extensive interview process. Case managers from identify their income and expenses and understand their crisis. Based on the results, there will be a Plan of Action developed with them.

Every situation and request is different, so World Overcomers Ministries tries to be flexible and they will not use income restrictions. The most common request for financial assistance is for rent. Or clients request help with utilities, including electric or propane bills. World Overcomers Ministries will not pay an entire overdue bill as part of ShelterNet, but will only help with a certain portion of what is due.

Clients will also need to enroll into Financial Management and Budgeting. Volunteers credit counselors from take an in-depth look at the household's finances and help them examine their purchases and establish a budget. This plan helps the client gain the ability to pay their bills or rent consistently on time.

The homeless and people facing imminent eviction can look into shelters and Transitional Housing as part of ShelterNet. Staff from World Overcomers Ministries assists homeless individuals by offering lodging or a meal. The other part of this will help clients acquire the skills they need to live independently and secure safe, permanent and affordable housing.

Clients will often be homeless pregnant woman 18 years or older, single parents, or veterans in Berkeley County. No matter the background, they can benefit from budgeting and nutritional counseling, case management, job training and more.

Thrift stores provides for the sale of gently used clothing and more. In some cases there will be new goods passed out, and this can range from furniture to clothing and many other household items at affordable prices. Also, the Ministries thrift store, which partners with Goodwill, fills referrals that are given to it from various agencies to those in need.

As many people know, the price of medical care is always increasing, in fact it is much faster than inflation. Staff help clients address any concerns with this issue. They can offer support to families for prescriptions in the form of vouchers. They will also refer a patient to a local community clinic in an effort to reduce costly hospitalization and ensure the client gets the medical care they need.
