Newberry Utility Bill Assistance Program

This program has provided thousands of dollars in financial aid to families in Newberry. The City of Newberry’s Utility Assistance Program helps lower income residents with paying their energy bills. More details on the city’s program is below. Another option is the Central Florida Community Action Agency which has also contributed to helping low-income residents who are currently struggling to pay their utility bills. Call 352-472-2161. This non-profit agency processes applications for programs such as LIHEAP.

The city of Newberry Florida created this assistance program after residents experienced excessively high utility bills. There were some examples of families being sent bills that were reaching as high as $900 for a single month. The cause of this issue was the result of poor management at the utility company. In addition to the cash grants being provided, the Newberry City Commission has also provided residents a break on their utility bills by charging 10 percent less than it should on the average monthly bill. Contact the city for more information.

Social services and general assistance

Newberry Florida is also served by the Alachua County/Newberry Social Services program. A number of programs and resources are offered to qualified low income residents of the city. Some of the resources administered range from emergency housing and rent assistance, to health care such as hearing aids and vision. Limited prescription assistance is offered to qualified people too. Call (352) 264-6750 or read below for more details.

The specific resources administered include health care assistance, which is equivalent to primary and specialty care services. These are offered from what is known as the Family Practice Medical Group. Limited prescription assistance may be available. If qualified, there is a $5.00 co-pay and a maximum of 10 prescriptions per month that can be paid for. Persons on Florida Medicaid are not eligible for this plan. Those Newberry seniors who are on the Medicare Part D prescription program are also not eligible for the prescription assistance program. Other medical care includes Diagnostic Services, Limited Medical Supplies, as well as eye Vision Exams and eyeglasses.

Some of the financial support that is part of social services includes the following. Apply for limited amounts of rent/mortgage and utility bill assistance one time in a 24 month period. If you apply then you need to have a hardship situation, and your loss of income or unexpected expense should not occur from something you did.

The city may pay for burial or cremation services for the very low income/indigent. If someone needs transportation then the city may have bus Passes for employment or medical reasons. Newberry Social Services may be able to provide a waiver/abatement to the solid waste assessment fee which is on a homeowner's annual property taxes. Last, but not least, social workers who are employed by the city or county can always provide Information and Referrals to federal government or state of Florida assistance programs. the phone number is (352) 264-6750.

Newberry Salvation Army (phone (352) 376-1743) refers people to an utility bill program that can provide help for bills a once per 12 month period payment. They also partner with other Florida energy bill programs. Other programs administered in Newberry include free food, clothing, and housing services and support for the low income.
