We are sorry to read that. Sadly, anecdotally and also supported by data, racism and bigotry (against religions, skin color, etc.) have all been increasing over these last few years. As far as some options for you around housing and deposit help, look here for security deposit assistance programs by state.

But of course, proving g racism, housing discrimination, being denied deposit help is hard to do. Often a lawyer is needed. So try this for free legal programs for struggling, low-income Americans.

Hello, my name is Dionte. I am a 36-year-old professional who is black, Native American, and pansexual. I am in need of assistance with a deposit or the first month’s rent for a new place. The reason for my move is that I have been facing racial aggression from my current apartment complex, including the use of derogatory phrases such as "you people." Unfortunately, without concrete evidence, cases like mine often go unaddressed, leaving me no choice but to seek a new living arrangement. And the racism is also impacting my ability to get help with the security deposit like some parts of the country with Black Americans.
I have applied to over 12 different places, but unfair typecasting with a hint of racism or bias due to my name has been a barrier for me. The pandemic greatly impacted my employment, leaving me out of work for over a year and forcing me to rely on credit cards to survive. After applying to more than 3,500 jobs, I finally secured a contract role, which recently ended, putting me in a precarious situation once again.
During my unemployment, I started a diversity consulting firm. While it has not gained much traction yet, I am hopeful, as I am committed to making a real difference in particular for the Black community that often lack access to capital and also face racism. I also have two emotional support dogs who are very important to me, and finding a safe place for us is my top priority.
I understand that everyone has been affected by the events of the last few years, but I am reaching out for any assistance you can provide to pay a security deposit. I applied for unemployment but was deemed ineligible despite working over 680 hours in six months, averaging 45 hours a week. If you are unable to assist, I hope you can pass my message along.
